Learning to swim at White Rock Primary School

Some children are more naturally competent and confident in the water and therefore will progress faster. Other children are slower to learn new skills but can quite often become stronger more proficient swimmers as they progress.

The most important factor is that each child learns to swim and enjoys learning to swim.

Swim England provides The Learn to Swim Stage 1-7 Awards that are divided into progressive stages. They make up the core, national syllabus of learning to swim for primary school aged children. They are designed to reward every child for their development of the essential aquatic skills they need to be confident, competent and safe in the water.

Each of the 7 stages are explained in detail in the progression document below:

At our school, we firmly believe in giving every child the opportunities to be able to swim confidently by the time they leave us at the end of Year 6. We feel this is especially important with our proximity to the coast, and to help children feel more confident when taking part in our unique Reach Outdoors programme and residentials.

We have invested in a swimming programme in partnership with Brixham Swimming Pool that allows each child in each class from Year 2-6 to attend a block of five swimming lessons every year.

Dates and times for all classes in the 2023/24 academic year can be found on the document below:
