'Inspiring Learning Together'

White Rock Primary School

Intent

The aim of our spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG) curriculum is to support our pupils to develop an understanding of grammar and knowledge of spelling rules and conventions which allows them to read and write clearly, accurately and in a range of contexts. We feel it is vital for children to develop a good understanding of SPAG in order to become successful readers and writers.

Our spelling, punctuation and grammar curriculum is taught within Writing lessons and not as stand alone lessons. This is to ensure that children understand how to apply these skills within their writing.

Little Wandle Phonics

In Nursery, Reception and Year One our spelling is taught through the Little Wandle Phonics programme. For more information, click the link below.

No Nonsense Spelling

From Year Two to Year Six, we follow the No Nonsense Spelling programme. This is a complete spelling programme which ensures all children are able to access all parts of the spelling curriculum. The focus of the programme is on the comprehensive teaching and learning of spelling, including knowledge of spelling conventions (patterns and rules), statutory words, common exceptions and personal spellings.
