Tuesday 4th July 2023 - Cooking

Year 6 had a fantastic morning of cooking. The children independently prepared their food to create a three course tasting menu. Children who made the starters, prepped their vegetables, added cous cous, cheese and pepperoni before putting the tasty stuffed peppers in the oven to be roasted. Children who made the main, prepped their vegetables, added risotto rice and patiently added stock whilst continually stirring to create a wonderful vegetable risotto. Finally, children who made the dessert, prepped their fruit, smashed their digestives into fine crumbs before layering a delicious dessert of biscuit, Greek yoghurt, fresh fruit and mango and passionfruit coulis. Check out our pictures below:

Friday 30th June 2023 - Fitness

As part of the Dartmoor Schools Partnership, Miss Lethbridge came in to work with Year 6 for the morning today. Each class had a session where we took part in fitness activities. We had to do each activity for 30 seconds and then rest before moving on to the next one. There were 8 activities - Agility Ladders, Sit Ups, Jumping Jacks, Shuttle Runs, Mountain Climbers, Push Ups, Squats and Burpees. We also learnt the names of the muscle groups we were working and how to stretch our muscles at the end.

30th June 2023-French-Les couleurs

Year 6 enjoyed learning the colours in French today. The children repeated the words and we played lots of interactive games to practise the new vocabulary.

Here are the words:

vert= green

rouge=red

blanc=white

noir=black

orange=orange

jaune= yellow

marron=brown

The children learnt that you don't say the 's' at the end of vert. It's a silent letter! Fantastique!

Madame Head was very impressed with the colour flowers the children made during the lesson. Look at the super example below.

Year 6 were excited to start learning French with Madame Head this week.

The children learnt basic greeting words such as bonjour, bonsoir and aurevoir. They also learnt the structure Je m'appelle- my name is. The children made amazing word clouds using the website wordart.com. They included all the new greeting words and also words associated to France. They really enjoyed this activity. Take a look at the fantastique clouds below. Tres bien! smiley

Friday 9th June - Physical Education

This week, Year 6 came together on the school field to practise our throwing, jumping and running skills in preparation for Sports Day. We had six stations: javelin, long jump, sprints, rest area, hurdles and shot put. Everyone did brilliantly; encouraging each other to be the very best we can be. Well done Year 6!

Friday 26th May 2023- Language Ambassadors smiley

Señorita Head was delighted to have three Language Ambassadors help with the Year 2 Spanish lessons this afternoon. The children introduced themselves in Spanish and included these details: name, age, birthday, where they live and information about their town! iMaravilloso!

Year 2 were so impressed at how much Spanish the Year 6 children could speak! iBuen suerte año 6!

The Year 6's also taught Spanish  numbers 1-15 to the younger children using colourful flashcards.

iGracias!

This week, we have been learning about our new focus artist, Angie Lewin. We have learnt that she uses printing techniques to create her artwork and her deigns are available on a global scale from artwork to textiles to home interiors. Throughout our art journey, we will use interpretations of Angie Lewin's printing techniques to create our own designs.

Friday 19th May - Maths

This week, Year 6 have been learning about finding and plotting co-ordinates on a grid. We now know how to identify all four quadrants, as well as, finding and plotting co-ordinates in all four quadrants. To consolidate our learning, we had an intense game of battleships with some children testing their knowledge of both positive and negative co-ordinates. Well done Y6!

Friday 17th March 2023 - British Science Week

This week is British Science Week. This years overarching theme is 'Connections' and at White Rock, we decided to explore this a little further and give Science Week a PSHE focus to learn about ourselves as unique individuals. The week started with a Science assembly, where we thought about who is a scientist. We discussed the stereotypical scientist (white coat, goggles, crazy hair) and came to the conclusion that we are all scientists!

In class, Year 6 looked at pattern seeking and correlations between variables. We took part in an investigation to identify whether there is a link between strength of legs and how far somebody can jump.

"Do the people with the strongest legs jump the furthest?"

To start, we had to think about how to identify and measure who had the strongest legs. We could then test and measure who could jump the furthest. Once we had recorded our data, we began looking for patterns and correlations between strength of legs and distance jumped.

Tuesday 14th March 2023 - Year 5/6 Dance Showcase - Let's Dance

The Year 5 and 6 Dance Club have spent weeks preparing for this show at South Dartmoor Community College, where a number of primary schools and secondary schools (from the Dartmoor Schools Sports Partnership) came together to showcase their dances. It was a fantastic afternoon, where the children watched the other performers and made origami hearts to decorate the entrance for when the parents arrived. The children did so well at learning the steps and then performing the dance twice - to the song Revolting Children from Matilda - on a stage with lighting and costumes. They were all amazing and performed the dance with great professionalism. A massive well done to everyone!

Tuesday 7th March - World Book Day 2023

On Tuesday, White Rock Primary School celebrated their world book day; dressing up as our favourite book characters. We started the day with a whole school assembly led by Mrs Walker. Then, Year 6 warmed up their story-telling skills by playing a game in groups of 4 to tell a story about an image of a sinking ship. We then created book covers for the image as well as a blurb. After break, we showcased our sculpture skills by creating characters or scenes from our stories using clay. Finally, we all took part in a whole school quiz and finished the day being read stories by various adults. Check out our photos below:

Friday 3rd March - Music

This week, we have started to learn about the Ukulele. We explored the instrument and learnt the correct names for the various parts of the ukulele. Together, we then learnt about chords and how to play four chords on ukulele: Am, C, F and G. Finally, we started to learn about strumming patterns and had a go at creating our own music using variations of the four chords and strumming patterns. Check out our photos below - lots of us had our concentration faces on!:

Friday 3rd March - Dance

Over the past two weeks, we have been learning a dance to the song 'Getcha Head in the Game' from High School Musical. In the film this song is centred around basketball, so we have taken that theme with imaginary basketballs! Mrs Tyson taught the first part, then we have choreographed a duet and today have begun to create a group section. Our aim is to dance to the beat of the music (our duet and group dance each have to be 16 beats long) and use unison and canon.

Friday 24th February 2023 - Fundraising event for ShelterBox

Due to the devastating news about Turkey and Syria's multiple earthquakes, some of our incredible pupils have been compelled to fundraise and are hoping to raise enough money to buy a Shelter Box that will help support those affected by the disaster.

Our Year 6 children have been fantastic at volunteering their time to help with the colouring competition and cake sale. Thank you Year 6!

Tuesday 7th February – Computing – Safer Internet Day assembly

Today is Safer Internet Day and we marked this by holding a whole school assembly.

During the assembly, each year group shared their own online safety song or poem with the rest of the school. They had all worked really hard to learn their pieces and this level of effort was clear to see in their confident performances.

The Digital Leaders had written their own poem, which will appear on the school website once they have filmed and edited it into a video.

Friday 3rd February 2023 - Writing

On Thursday, we had local journalist - Dave Thomas, visit Year 6 to talk to us about his career in Journalism with a focus on Sports reporting. We had the opportunity to ask Dave questions about his career and tips for report writing; this will help us with our writing over the next few weeks. Dave also shown us the incredible art of writing in short hand - a skill which blew us away!

Friday 27th January 2023 - Writing

In Writing, we have been learning how to use the writing strategy 'show not tell' to create imagery for the reader and build tension. We have used video clips from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to put ourselves in the characters shoes and write a recount such as how Ron Weasely might have felt during the sorting ceremony. We had a go at including figurative and sensory language to build suspense throughout our writing. Check out some of our recounts below:

Friday 20th January - Harry Potter Day

On Thursday, Year 6 had their immersive day for our new Writing Journey - Harry Potter: A journey through a History of Magic. Some of us came to school dressed up as our favourite Harry Potter characters. We descended down to 'The Great Hall' where we started our morning listening to Stephen Fry read chapter one: The Boy Who Lived, we were then sorted into our houses: Gryffindor,  Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. Once we were sat with our houses, we got started on our Design and Technology project which was to create a Quidditch stand which we will use later on for our cross-curricular learning this Term. Check out our photos below:

Friday 9th December - Learning Celebration and Art

This week, we have consolidated our Art unit on sculpture to create our own family sculptures inspired by Henry Moore. We have learnt subject specific skills, when using clay, such as to join two pieces of clay we must score (we used a toothbrush to do this), slip (this is a clay and water mix which acts like glue) and blend (we used clay tools and our hands to blend the two pieces of clay together).

On Friday, we invited our adults into school for our Year 6 Learning Celebration. We started it off with some festive carols, followed by showcasing our fairy tales we have written during our Writing lessons, Spanish learning with Senorita Head and an Art exhibition of our Henry Moore inspired clay sculptures. Well done Year 6, what a fantastic Term we have had! Check out our learning below:

Friday 2nd December 2022 - Writing

Our Writing unit over the last few weeks has been based around the text - Straw into Gold. Throughout our writing journey, we have learnt how to portray characterisation through dialogue, how to write a setting and character description using 'show not tell' and how to embed features of a fairy tale such as fairy tale language and the power of three. For our independent writing, we wrote our own traditional fairy tale re-spun. Some of us, fused a number of fairy tales into one piece of writing whilst keeping to one plot. We all created our own front pages too. Check out some of our fairy tales below:

Friday 25th November 2022 - Art

In Art, we have been learning about the sculptor, Henry Moore. We have created an artist study page to learn more about Henry Moore and why he is famous in the Art world. On Friday, we had a go at re-creating one of his sculptures using clay. For many of us, this was the first-time using clay and we loved exploring the material and experimenting with it. Over the next few weeks, we will be learning different skills and techniques when using clay. Check out our Art learning below:

Friday 18th November - Children in Need and Anti-Bullying week
This week, as a school, we’ve come together to raise money for BBC Children in Need. Thank you to those that donated, by purchasing merchandise from our Year 6 sellers and by donating a pound to wear something SPOTactular or non-school uniform, to such an incredibly cause – we’ve raised an enormous amount of money. On Friday afternoon, we learnt more about how and why BBC Children in Need was started, what people can do to raise money and where the money goes and who it can help. After the assembly, the children were given the task of re-designing Pudsey the Bear however they wanted and the designs they produced were incredible. Also, check out our photos of our odd socks in helping to raise awareness for Anti-Bullying week.

Friday 11th November 2022 - Opera Performance

This afternoon, we watched an amazing opera called ‘Tutankhamun’s Shoes’. The singing was incredible; we heard operatic voices in a range of vocal registers such as soprano and alto. During the performance, we were encouraged to join in with rhythmic clapping sections as well as passing around some of the props. We learnt about Tutankhamun's burial and then the discovery of the of his tomb by Howard Carter. We also discovered that he was buried with a lot of gold! Check out some photos from the performance below:

Friday 4th November 2022 - Drama

Eagles have had a brilliant first week back to school after the October half term. We have immersed ourselves into our new writing journey based on the text 'Straw into Gold.' We recapped the classic fairy tale - Rumpelstiltskin and created a storyboard to help use re-tell the story. As it was outdoor learning day, we decided to take our learning outside! We created freeze-frames of the main parts of the classic fairy tale- 'Rumpelstiltskin'. Check out our drama skills below:

Friday 14th October 2022 - Science

We have been learning about osmosis in Science this week. We set up an experiment using jelly babies, water, salt-water and coke. We made predictions about what would happen to the jelly babies in the various liquids. We observed the jelly babies in the liquids over time. We were utterly shocked at the size of some of our jelly babies that were in water - they had at least doubled in size - a result of osmosis!

Below are some images of us measuring our jelly babies before they were submerged in the liquids.

Friday 7th October 2022 - African Dance Assembly

Today, we had African Dancers come into school and take our assembly. They taught us a song that they would sing, in their village, to call all the villagers together. They also shared some actions with another song and tricked us by doing a different action to the one they were saying. The whole school got up and joined in with a dance and then some of the adults had a go! Check out some of our photos below:

Friday 30th September 2022 - Fire Safety Talk

The Paignton Fire Service came to visit today. They talked to us about what they do and explained that they don't just go to fires. They showed us a clip of a dog being rescued from a cliff and a photo of a cow that had ended up in someone’s swimming pool!

If we ever need the Fire Brigade, we must ring 999. They explained that the operator would ask us three questions. What emergency service do you need? Where are you? What seems to be the problem? We must only ring when it is an emergency as you might take the service away from someone who really needs it. If you don’t know where you are they said you can use an app called ‘WhatThreeWords’ which gives you three words that shows your location.

Paignton Fire Brigade also spoke to us about being safe in the house and showed us some images so that we could identify the fire safety hazards. We then looked at some damage that fires have caused and a video of how fire spreads.

Timon and Pumbaa explained what we should do when there is a fire. They sang a song to help us remember - Get down, get out, stay out. It's also important they we have an escape plan if there's a fire. We have one at school and they advised that we design one for our homes.

Paignton Fire Station are holding an event on Saturday 8th October. You can go to the station and see what they do, between 10am-3pm. It sounded like great fun!

Monday 26th September - Coasteering

On Monday afternoon, we put on our wetsuits, buoyancy aids and helmets and headed down to the picturesque Churston cove. When we arrived the tide was out! Therefore, we used our climbing skills to climb over the headland to find the perfect spot to safely enter the water and experience the swell. Eagles were brilliant at showing their bravery and water-confidence skills. We then swam around to Fishcombe cove and carried out activities with Reach Outdoors. Eagles were having such a fun time that a local Brixham seal made an appearance to see what we were all up to. Well done Eagles, you were all incredible. I'm most proud of how supportive you were of each other and your positive attitudes! Check out our photos below:

Friday 23rd September - Science

In Science, we have been learning about the circulatory system. We can now identify the four chambers of the heart, the three types of blood vessels and their role in the circulatory system. We carried out a scientific investigation to understand how blood flow is restricted in different sized arteries. Check out photos from our investigation below:

Friday 16th September 2022 - Writing

In Year 6, we have immersed ourselves in our new class text 'Women in science: 50 pioneers who changed the world.' We have identified the features of both an autobiography and biography, using the interesting biographies from our class text. Furthermore, we have learnt how to identify and write using passive verb form. Check out our learning below:

Friday 9th September - Spanish, Dance and Computing.

Eagles have made a fantastic start to Year 6! During our Spanish learning, we recapped how to say emotions in Spanish and challenged ourselves with our Spanish numbers. In Dance, we immersed ourselves in our new topic of traditional Greek dancing, taking inspiration from videos of Greek Dancers and testing out ideas. For our Computing lesson, we got to grips with our new Computing suite and explored how to use the new equipment. A great start to the year Eagles, well done!
