Monday 17th July 2023 – Maths – Money Sense

This week at White Rock, we have had an assembly on, ‘Money Sense’.  Mrs Ayling talked to us about how adults need to manage money and budget for things. In Year 5, we found out about bank statements. We learnt that there are lots of documents that help you with spending and saving. We then completed a task, which helped us locate different information on a bank statement, such as direct debits, balances and standing orders.

Tuesday 11th July 2023 - #ExploreMore - Learning Celebration - Teach the parent

Today, we held our learning celebration for this term's topic, '#ExploreMore'. We set up a selection of activities in the Year 5 classrooms and on the mezzanine, which we had enjoyed taking part in throughout this term. We visited each activity with our adults and taught them what we had learnt.

Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended the Year 5 learning celebration today. It was fantastic to see you all getting involved with the activities. Don't worry if you couldn't come, here are some photos to show you what we did.

Thursday 7th July 2022 - Transition Day

Today we spent the day in our new Year 6 classroom, Hawks, with our new Year 6 teacher, Mrs Cliff. We completed activities such as a fact file all about ourselves so that Mrs Cliff can get to know us as individuals. We also got creative and sketched Paignton seafront. We used different techniques such as, drawing with the opposite hand to hand to the one we write with, and using a continuous line. At the end of the school day, our adults were invited into school to meet our teacher and see our new classroom. We had a great day and are looking forward to September.

Monday 26th June 2023 – RSHE – Changes during puberty

This week in Year 5, we have been learning about the physical and emotional changes bodies go through during puberty. We learnt about the reproductive organs and what changes we may see during menstruation and sperm production. In our final lesson, the children learnt the importance of personal hygiene.

Friday 23rd June 2023- Spanish- School subjects (las asignaturas)

Year 5 really impressed Señorita Head this week during the Spanish lesson. The children have been learning school subjects in Spanish plus opinion words. Here are the words to practise at home. iVamos!

el ingles-English

el frances-French

el arte-Art

el español-Spanish

la educacion fisica-PE

la historia-History

la geografia-Geography

las matematicas-Maths

las ciencias-Science

We played lots of interactive games and made sentences using an opinion and school subjects. E.g Me encanta español y detesto el ingles. The children made amazing sentences using connectives such as 'y' and 'tambien'

 heartheartme encanta

heartme gusta

 broken heartno me gusta

 broken heartbroken heartdetesto

iEl trabajo fantastico!

Thursday 22nd June 2023 - Computing

Year 5 have been exploring how useful databases are. They have been learning and using the related vocabulary. Today they used the 'search' and 'sort by' tools to find answers in a database about the countries of the world.

They were able to demonstrate how fast computers can search large databases - much faster than any human!

Thursday 15th June - DT

As part of our Design Technology learning this term, Year 5 have been exploring rovers used by NASA. We developed a design criteria for a new rover and used the Lego WeDo sets to build, programme and evaluate our designs.

Monday 12th June 2023 - Science

In Science this week, we have been learning about Earth and Space. This included an observation over time enquiry to answer this question:

How do shadows change throughout the day?

First, we looked at sundials and how they use a gnomon that points to the time marker. From this, we made a prediction about what might happen to our shadows throughout the day. To make our tests fair, we chose who the gnomon would be and drew around their feet in chalk so that we always took the test in the same place. Next, we used a metre stick to measure the length of their shadow and a compass to find out which direction they faced (our dependent variables). We did this hourly (our independent variable) and recorded the results in a table. We used our results to draw a line graph. We noticed that our shadows move regularly from West to East over the day and they also get shorter towards the middle of the day before growing in length again.

Thursday 8th June 2023 - World Ocean Day

In assemblies this week, we have been learning about the environment. Monday 5th June marked National Environment Day and Thursday 8th June marks World Ocean Day. We discussed actions we can take to help look after our environment and revisited the actions of Greta Thunberg. We learnt about The Big Paddle Cleanup 2023, which is an inspiring event that brings together individuals passionate about protecting our oceans, rivers, and waterways.

Thursday 8th June 2023 - Dance

In Dance this week, Year 5 have been learning Merengue - a dance from the Dominican Republic. Each week, we will be learning a dance traditionally from  different parts of South America. Take a look at our moves in the photos below.

Thursday 25th May 2023 – PSHE

Today we have been absolutely amazed at the standard of speeches that the Year 5 pupils have written. Those that spoke had clearly thought deeply about the chosen topic - Children and young people’s views on homelessness and housing. All the children listened to the speeches and then had three votes to elect their representatives.

We talked about the process of voting and that completing a vote is private and anonymous. Next, we discussed that if you use more votes than you have been allocated, on your ballot sheet, this ‘spoils’ your ballot sheet.

The Year 5 teachers are so proud of all the children who have taken part and look forward to sharing the result of the pupil vote.

Thursday 18th May 2023 - Gymnastics

Year 5 have been enjoying the Gymnastics block this half term. This week, we have been creating sequences that include rolls and balances. We had to make sure we used control and body tension to keep in the correct shape for the rolls and to stay balanced.

Thursday 11th May 2023 - History

This week, in History, Year 5 have been discovering how exploration in the sixteenth century led to better knowledge of the world. To do this, we looked at various maps of the world, from the Tudor period. We compared the maps and could see some similarities and differences. We saw that over time, the maps changed and more continents, countries, islands and oceans were labelled, that weren't labelled before. This was because during the Middle Ages, Europeans knew nothing of faraway places such as America or Australia. By 1600, this had completely changed. As sailors, particularly from Europe, went on voyages of exploration, the knowledge of the world developed. More continents and countries were discovered, which let to more accurate maps.

The maps we looked at...

Friday 5th May 2023 - Celebrating King Charles III's Coronation

This week, Year 5 have been celebrating the King’s Coronation by designing our own flags. Some of us were inspired by Jo Di Bona, our focus artist that we looked at in the Autumn Term, and used elements of his 'pop graffiti' style to decorate our flags.  In today's whole school assembly, we sang 'Coronation Day' and 'Sing for the King' together whilst proudly wearing red, white and blue items of clothing and waving our decorative flags in celebration.

Thursday 4th May 2023 – Computing

This week in Computing Year 5 have started turning a design they have created into a Scratch game.  They have been exploring new vocabulary – variables, sequences, and selection.  They have been discussing how they are using these in their own learning and practising an action to help them remember what selection is.

Friday 28th April 2023 - Home Learning

Here are the songs to practise for the King's Coronation assembly.

Monday 24th April 2023 – Spoken Language

For our Writing Journey, we are looking at the poem ‘The Sea by James Reeves’. In class, we have annotated the poem to think about expression when reading it aloud. Some of us had a go in class.

Here is the poem to share with the people at home.

The Sea by James Reeves

The sea is a hungry dog,
Giant and grey.
He rolls on the beach all day.
With his clashing teeth and shaggy jaws
Hour upon hour he gnaws
The rumbling, tumbling stones,
And 'Bones, bones, bones, bones!’
The giant sea-dog moans,
Licking his greasy paws.

And when the night wind roars
And the moon rocks in the stormy cloud,
He bounds to his feet and snuffs and sniffs,

Shaking his wet sides over the cliffs,
And howls and hollos long and loud.

But on quiet days in May or June,
When even the grasses on the dune
Play no more their reedy tune,
With his head between his paws
He lies on the sandy shores,
So quiet, so quiet, he scarcely snores.

Wednesday 19th April 2023 – Maths

In Maths this week, we have been finding out how to calculate the perimeter and area of a 2D closed shape. To find out the perimeter we add up the length of all the sides. To calculate the area, we multiply the length by the width. We have also found out that we can calculate the perimeter and area of compound shapes. These are shapes that are made up of two or more 2D shapes.

SPRING TERM

Spring term curriculum map

Tuesday 28th March 2023 - PE - Swimming

This term, we have been going to Brixham Swimming Pool weekly to swim. We have all gained in confidence and have been working on improving our strength and technique when in the water.

Wednesday 22nd March 2023 - Peter Pan Jr Performance

Year 5 and 6 were invited by Paignton Academy to watch a matinee performance of Peter Pan Jr. We thoroughly enjoyed the performance. In particular, we enjoyed clapping to save poor Tinkerbell after she drank the poison, and booing at Captain Hook! Those of us that are hoping to attend Paignton Academy in a few years, have been inspired to take part in future performances.

Based on J.M. Barrie’s classic tale, Peter Pan is one of the most beloved and frequently performed family favourites of all time. Peter and his mischievous fairy sidekick, Tinkerbell, visit the nursery of the Darling children late one night and, with a sprinkle of pixie dust, begin a magical journey across the stars that none of them will ever forget. In the adventure of a lifetime, the travellers come face to face with a ticking crocodile, the fierce brave girls, a band of bungling pirates and the villainous Captain Hook.

Friday 17th March 2023 - British Science Week

This week is British Science Week. This years overarching theme is 'Connections' and at White Rock, we decided to explore this a little further and give Science Week a PSHE focus to learn about ourselves as unique individuals. The week started with a Science assembly, where we thought about who is a scientist. We discussed the stereotypical scientist (white coat, goggles, crazy hair) and came to the conclusion that we are all scientists!

In class, Year 5 looked at pattern seeking and correlations between variables. We took part in an investigation to identify whether there is a link between strength of legs and how far somebody can jump.

"Do the people with the strongest legs jump the furthest?"

To start, we had to think about how to identify and measure who had the strongest legs. We could then test and measure who could jump the furthest. Once we had recorded our data, we began looking for patterns and correlations between strength of legs and distance jumped.

Tuesday 14th March 2023 - Year 5/6 Dance Showcase - Let's Dance

The Year 5 and 6 Dance Club have spent weeks preparing for this show at South Dartmoor Community College, where a number of primary schools and secondary schools (from the Dartmoor Schools Sports Partnership) came together to showcase their dances. It was a fantastic afternoon, where the children watched the other performers and made origami hearts to decorate the entrance for when the parents arrived. The children did so well at learning the steps and then performing the dance twice - to the song Revolting Children from Matilda - on a stage with lighting and costumes. They were all amazing and performed the dance with great professionalism. A massive well done to everyone!

Thursday 9th March 2023 - Computing

In Computing this week we have begun to design our own Scratch games, based upon either the maze or racing games we have already made. We have been challenged with adding elements to make the games our own - this could include things like collecting items and scoring points, speed boosts, secret passageways, teleporting sprites, and many other exciting ideas.

Tuesday 7th March 2023 – Reading and Drama

Today, we celebrated World Book Day at White Rock. We all dressed up as our favourite book characters. We had lots of exciting activities to do throughout the day. We went on a book hunt and collected clues around the school and after that we answered the questions in the World Book Day quiz.  After break, we completed a drama activity called ‘Conscience Alley’. We used a character from our class to give us inspiration – The Cat in the Hat. We had to think of a problem for a character in the story. We came up with: Should the children let the Cat in Hat in? We gave reasons he should and reasons why he shouldn’t. Then we lined up and said our reasons to the character, as they walked between to the two groups. Next, we took part in the Live Lesson and thought about genres and language choices that the author makes, along with some other activities about characters. What a great day!

Drama - Conscience Alley

Tuesday 28th February – DT

As part of our DT learning, we have begun to evaluate, design and make our own paper planes. We have been building on our understanding of air resistance, which links to our Science learning on Forces. We really enjoyed making some of the known designs and flying them outside. We had some brilliant flyers too! Some stayed up in the air the longest, while others flew a greater distance.

Thursday 23rd February - Dance

This week we have been creating dances that show the hardship the slaves and servants of Ancient Egypt had while building the pyramids. We had to include a trapping section, using a circular shape with our body and include different levels, directions and speeds. The whole dance represents the relationship between those in charge (the ones trapping) and those that were building the pyramids at the time.

Wednesday 22nd February 2023 – Art

This week we have completed our pinch pots. The designs were inspired by the Ancient Egyptian pots we have been look at and sketching in History sessions. We used browns and plain colours to transfer our designs onto the pots.

Tuesday 21st February 2023 - Geography

This week in Geography, we have been looking at food miles - where our food comes from and how far it has to travel to end up on our plates. Using an atlas, we started by locating the country and then we used an iPad to see how many miles that item travels to the United Kingdom. For example, Pineapples imported from Costa Rica, travel 5282 miles!

Friday 10th February 2023 - PE - Handball

In their final Handball lesson in PE, Merlins children were able to demonstrate their learning by competing in some exciting small sided matches. Lots of excellent matchplay and teamwork was on display with some great passing, movement off the ball and shooting, and all played within the complicated rules of the game.

Tuesday 7th February 2023 –  Computing

Today is Safer Internet Day and we marked this by holding a whole school assembly. During the assembly, each year group shared their own online safety song or poem with the rest of the school. They had all worked really hard to learn their pieces and this level of effort was clear to see in their confident performances. The Digital Leaders had written their own poem, which will appear on the school website once they have filmed and edited it into a video.

Tuesday 31st January 2023 - Science - Wonderstruck

We went to Brixham College to watch the Wonderstruck science show. The first thing Peter told us was to NEVER do this at home as it is VERY DANGEROUS!

First, we looked at how air moves. Peter blew air at us from a bucket, but because we could see it, he added some smoke from his smoke machine to show us how the air travelled.

Next, he created a rocket using a burning reaction. He said we needed three things – fuel, a flame and oxygen.  Once he’d shown us, he put on a larger one with a backpack. We thought he would take off...but he didn't. This was because the force of gravity was stronger than the up thrust.

After this, he showed us his bed of nails. Because the force is spread across so many nails it will not go through his skin. Miss Pacey got to put a smaller bed of nails and a concrete block on top of him and then break the block.

Lastly, we were given instructions to make a rocket. We then made our own rockets and tested them on the school field. They went a really long way! We had a fantastic day.

Tuesday 24th January 2023 - Science

Today, 12 children from Year 5 attended a Science Day at Torquay Boys Grammar School. During the day, the children completed a 'Rocket Car' challenge in small groups, where they had to design a rocket car that would travel the furthest distance. The children were lucky enough to visit the Observatory, where the Torbay Astronomical Society host regular observation evenings, watch some fantastic experiments in the Science Labs and take a look around the exciting Science Fair. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Friday 20th January 2023 – History – The Ancient Egyptians

Today we have been looking at timelines. We have thought about when and where the Ancient Egyptians lives. Using a timeline, we ordered events from this period. Next, we looked at some maps to locate Egypt on the continent of Africa and then on a world map.

Tuesday 17th January 2023 – Maths

12 children from across Year 5 and 6 attended an Aim High Maths session at a local primary where they were set a series of challenges to solve. The children did fantastically and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Thursday 12th and 18th January 2023 – PE – Reach Outdoors

For the past two weeks, we have been with Reach Outdoors to complete some climbing activities. We all had a fantastic time climbing. Everyone in the group pushed themselves to climb further up the wall. We encouraged and supported each other. Like the group before us, we had to think about how to be safe and use the procedures, that we had been taught, to get up and down the wall.

Amelia says, “It’s fun when you climb but going down can be a bit scary.”

Scarlett says, “I enjoyed it but didn’t like looking down.”

Tabitha says, “It’s great fun when you are doing it, but it takes a lot of determination to get to the top.

Taylor says, “If you got the chance to do the hangover climb, it was a real challenge, you had to stretch your arms and legs a lot to reach the grips.”

Thursday 12th January 2023 – D&T – Soup Making

This week, we have been learning all about soup making. First, we thought about why we make soup and discussed the different types (like broths and stews). We looked at why you would make and eat soups and how they are a great way to contribute to a healthy lifestyle and a balance diet.

We looked at the different soups that you can get on the market and how they are packaged. As a class we thought about why cans, plastics and cartons are good to use to package soups and the reason retailers make those choices about what to use, and that as a result they are stored in different ways.

Next, we tested some shop-bought soups to see which ones we liked and completed a chart on taste, appearance, consistency and texture.

Once we knew which flavours we liked, we created some designs and then picked the best one to make a final design, which we then created a recipe for.

To make our soups, we had to be very careful using the knives. We listened well and found out that different vegetables are cut, chopped and peeled in different ways.

Here we are doing our learning this week...

Wednesday 4th January 2023 - Science - Separating mixtures

This week, Year 5 have learnt about what a mixture is and how they can be separated. We looked at filtering, sieving and evaporating. We were given a selection of materials to separate. After thinking about the size of the particles and the state of the materials in the mixtures, in groups we decided the best method to separate the mixtures.

AUTUMN TERM

Autumn term curriculum map

Wednesday 14th December 2022 – English – Poetry Day

Today we celebrated Poetry Day, in Merlins. To begin our day, we had an assembly where we thought about different types of poetry and how raps and rapping is linked to poetry.

Next, we did some performance poetry. There are three things we needed to think about when doing our performances. The first was to think about our tone of voice, how to change the speed of what were saying and then finally some actions we could add. We then performed them to the rest of the class. Here are some photos:

At one part of the day, we had a virtual visitor – Joshua Seigal. He shared some of his poems with us, (I don’t like poetry and Tell the dog). He then taught us how to write a five-line-poem. We had to pick an emotion and think of as many things as we could about that emotion. This formed the basis of our poem. Joshua talked to us about not rushing and taking our time with our decisions.

We also looked at a range of poems from a book called, ‘Lost Magic – The very best of Brian Moses’. We explained what we liked and disliked about them and discussed this with members of the group.

In the afternoon, we shared our poems with Year 1. We had a fantastic day!

Friday 9th December 2022 - Home Learning - Who to share your details with?

This week in assembly time, we have been learning a song called, 'Who to share your details with?'. We have listened to this song in our Computing lessons with Mrs Broderick to support our learning about how to be safe online. As a year group, we will be singing and performing the song to the rest of the school on Safer Internet Day in February. You have been provided with a copy of the lyrics. The video link is below.

Monday 28th November 2022 - 'Same but different' - Learning Celebration - Teach the parent

Today, we held our learning celebration for this term's topic, 'Same but different'.

Monday 14th November 2022 - PSHE - Anti-Bullying Week

Today marks the start of Anti-Bullying Week. This morning, we listened to Mrs Tomkinson's assembly and watched Andy and The Odd Socks singing this years new song, 'Calling Out'. Lots of us wore our odd socks to encourage people to express themselves and to celebrate individuality. This afternoon we discussed the importance of being kind. We gave our learning partners a kind message and thought about the impact kindness has on someone's feelings.

Friday 11th November 2022 - Drama - The English Touring Opera

Today, we watch an opera called ‘Tutankhamun’s Shoes’. When he was alive, he was known as a living God. The singing was amazing, and we were encouraged to join in when there were rhythmic, clapping sections and actions. We also got passed some of the props. We learnt about his burial and then the discovery of the of his tomb by Howard Carter. We also discovered that he was buried with a lot of gold!

Thursday 3rd November – Outdoor Learning Day

Today we took our learning outside to celebrate Outdoor Learning Day! In small groups, we chose a double-page spread from ‘The Ice Bear’, which is the book we are using to inspire our writing to create either a role-play or freeze frame.  Using sticks, leaves and stones found in the woodland area and playground, Merlins produced some very creative freeze-frames, which really helped us to understand the book better.

Thursday 20th October 2022 – PSHE – Police Visit

Mrs Veitch – a Police Community Support Officer – came into school today to talk to us about how we communicate online and about making good choices when we are online. She talked to us about how it is ok to be cross sometimes but we need to find ways to get rid of this anger – perhaps by writing on a piece of paper and throwing it in the bin or talking to a trusted adult. She also explained to us that it was not okay to type our unkind thoughts about others, share it with people online, and then keep doing it on a regular basis. Mrs Veitch said it was really important to be responsible for our own actions and to ensure that we are making good decisions.

Wednesday 19th October 2022 – Let’s Think in English – The Island

In Let’s think in English, we used the text ‘The Island’ to support discussion on racism and discrimination. We thought about what it was like to be a stranger on the island and how the islanders reacted to him. Once we had read the entire narrative, we thought about how the islander’s behaviour isolated them from the rest of the world.

Tuesday 11th October 2022 - Science - Daisy Investigation

Year 5 have been investigating the properties of materials. In groups, using a variety of types of paper, they planned and carried out an enquiry to answer: Which paper creates the best daisy? They discussed which results they would note down and what they would do next time to ensure they carried out a fair test.

Tuesday 11th October 2022 – Dance – African Dancing

Today, we had African Dancers come into school and take our assembly. They taught us a song that they would sing, in their village, to call all the villagers together. They also shared some actions with another song and tricked us by doing a different action to the one they were saying. The whole school got up and joined in with a dance and then some of the adults had a go!

Monday 3rd October 2022 – Science – Animals, including humans

Today, we have been looking at the different stages of life, from being an embryo through to adulthood and growing old. We have thought about how we grow and that changes can happen at different times and in a different order for each of us. We understand that milestones are a significant stage or event in the development of something.

We conducted a pattern seeking investigation, as a class, on height and ages. This is the statement we used:

"The oldest children in Merlins are the tallest. Is this true?"

We looked for patterns in the data. These were hard to find, but we were able to conclude that younger people can be taller and older people can be shorter.

Next, we compared some famous people and ordered them from youngest to oldest. We discussed observations we could make to age people – hair colour, skin and facial features, such as hair growth.

Friday 30th September 2022 – PSHE – Fire Safety Talk

The Paignton Fire Service came to visit today. They talked to us about what they do and explained that they don't just go to fires. They showed us a clip of a dog being rescued from a cliff and a photo of a cow that had ended up in someone’s swimming pool!

If we ever need the Fire Brigade, we must ring 999. They explained that the operator would ask us three questions. What emergency service do you need? Where are you? What seems to be the problem? We must only ring when it is an emergency as you might take the service away from someone who really needs it. If you don’t know where you are they said you can use an app called ‘WhatThreeWords’ which gives you three words that shows your location.

Paignton Fire Brigade also spoke to us about being safe in the house and showed us some images so that we could identify the fire safety hazards. We then looked at some damage that fires have caused and a video of how fire spreads.

Timon and Pumbaa explained what we should do when there is a fire. They sang a song to help us remember - Get down, get out, stay out. It's also important they we have an escape plan if there's a fire. We have one at school and they advised that we design one for our homes.

Paignton Fire Station are holding an event on Saturday 8th October. You can go to the station and see what they do, between 10am-3pm. It sounded like great fun!

Tuesday 20th September 2022 – PHSE – Teamwork

Today, during our PHSE session, we were thinking about how we work as a team. We discussed on the skills you would need to be a good team player. After talking together, we said you need to listen, share ideas and following instructions.

In the photos, we are getting ourselves into height order without talking. We had to think of other ways to communicate. Once we did this challenge, we lined up in order of our birthday months, which was even more of a challenge!!!

Thursday 15th September 2022 - Reach Outdoors - Coasteering

Today Merlins had a go at Coasteering, which is a combined rock and water activity. Wearing sturdy footwear, wet suits, buoyancy aids and helmets. The water was very cold when we first got in, but we soon got used to it. During our session, we had a go at rock climbing and learnt some scrambling techniques, as well as how to jump from heights into the sea safely. We had a great time!

Friday 9th September 2022 – Back to school
