'Inspiring Learning Together'

White Rock Primary School

WELCOME TO YEAR 2 CRANES

Cranes are opportunistic birds that change their diet according to the season. Cranes class demonstrate this when they adapt their learning skills to different topics. Cranes are kind and helpful to others and bring teamwork into all aspects of our school day. However, they can be solitary at times, using independence and resilience when faced with certain challenges.

Our fraction learning has continued in Maths this week. We have been learning how to identify halves and quarters and also been looking at equivalent fractions. The children have also learnt how to draw bar models to represent fractions of numbers. We are now feeling super confident about this.

Summer Term Week 1 W.C 25.4.22
This week we have been lucky enough to meet Senorita Head and have her teach us Spanish in the classroom. After learning Spanish via computer this year, it was great to finally be able to practise our Spanish with her. We had so much fun meeting Pedro and Rocky. We even got to try on some typical Spanish costumes. Senorita Head will now be teaching us Spanish on a Thursday afternoon each week.

Spring Term 2 W.C 28.3.22 Week 5

This week in Maths, Cranes have been making 3d shapes! We carefully counted out the correct number of straws to represent edges and Blu Tack to represent the vertices. It was quite tricky at times but we demonstrated perseverance and finally made our shapes. Can you see which 3d shape we made?

Spring Term 2 Wk. Beg. 21.3.22 - Week 4

This week we were lucky enough to be visited by the Paddleboat Theatre Group. We watched an amazing play with exciting and hilarious characters. Cranes rated it a 5 star performance!

Spring Term 2 - Week 3 - W.C 14.3.21

Wow what an exciting day! Friday was our annual Red Nose Day where the children were invited to dress up as Super Heroes or attend school in their own clothes. On top of this, we also had our KS1 PE festival led by South Dartmoor PE Partnership. We had a great time having a go at all the different activities on offer and learnt lots with the help of our Year 6 sports leaders. Check out the photos of our exciting day below!

Spring Term 2 - Week 2 W.C 8.3.21

In spring term we have been learning all about the History of flight. This has included exploring significant people such as the Montgolfier brothers' first hot air balloon and the Wright brothers' first glider. This week we have been learning about flying beyond are planet and have been exploring the key events in the life of Neil Armstrong. We have also been learning to order events in chronological order.

Spring Term 2 - Week 1 W.C 1.3.21

Cranes have had a very exciting first week back after half term! On World Book Day, we took part in a book swap, where half of Year 6 Hawks came to Cranes and half of Cranes went to Hawks' classroom. The children took it in turns to read their book to each other and talk about them. They also loved seeing everyone's amazing World Book Day outfits!

Half Term Break

Spring Term Week 7 - W.C 14/2/22

It was great to be able to take part in our computing sessions again this week. In these sessions, we have been learning about 'coding' and developing algorithms that our Beebot can follow. We have also been learning to analyse and 'debug' our programmes when they were not successful. When writing these algorithms, we have also been learning our directional language such as left and right.

Spring Term Week 6 - W.C 7/2/22

This week we have been learning all about division. We have explored practically the two concepts of grouping and sharing. We have also been relating these to real word problems to add content to our Maths. Year 2 have also started a 'Battle of the Bands' on Times Table Rockstars. On this programme the children need to recall multiplication and divison facts as quickly as possible. Log on and have a go to earn points for Cranes!

Spring Term Week 5 - W.C 31/1/22

As part of a new initiative to foster a love for reading, Year 2 have been going down to the library to explore all the interesting texts in school. We have loved exploring all the different kinds of books and have been learning about how we can tell if a book will grasp our attention. We have been taking these books home to read alongside our reading practise texts.

Spring Term Week 4 - 24/01/22

This week we have been undertaking some DT skills which have involved designing and making stable structures. Inspired by our text for writing 'Outdoor Wonderland' these are going to be turned into miniature tents and dens after we decorate them with leaves. However before doing so we had to learn about using perseverance in order to create stable joins with wooden dowel rods.

Spring Term Week 3 - 17/01/22

This week we would love to share with you some photos of our Dance lessons. With the whole school topic of 'One World, One Heart' we have been thinking about how we can show kindness to each other and the people around us. We have been choreographing our own dance actions to show kindness and how we want to treat each other. The song 'Nothing More' by Alternative Routes has inspired us.

Spring Term - Week 2 - 10/1/22

We have had great fun this week learning about animal adaptations. We have been considering how animals have changed over time so they can suit their habitats. We have really enjoying doing our experiment involving our 'blubber glove' which taught us how polar bears and artic animals manage to stay warm in cold habitats. Pictures below....

Wk Beg 03.01.22 - Week 1

Cranes have had a fantastic first week back after the Christmas holidays. We have been looking at money this week. We reminded ourselves about the value of each coin and came up with some 'Top Tips' to help us count different amounts of money. We also used base 10 to show the value of different coin combinations.

Autumn Term - W/C 13/12/21

Today was our eagerly awaited Christmas Dinner and the hall looked amazing. We were all very excited and enjoyed listening to the Christmas music as we tucked into turkey and all the trimmings and pulled our crackers. We even had gingerbread men and ice cream for dessert! Have a look at the photos below to see what happened...

Autumn Term - Week 10 - w/c 15.11.21

In Cranes this week we wanted to show our support for Children in Need, so we took part in Joe Wicks' live workout and quiz! We had to answer the question correctly by doing the correct movements. What a workout! The children also had great fun coming into school in all their pudsey themed clothes. Photos below...

Autumn Term - Week 9 - w/c 8.11.21

Our writing this half term is based around the story 'Orion and the Dark'.

This week we have learnt how to use question marks and exclamation marks and when to use them in our writing. We practised this by sorting different sentences into whether they needed a question mark, full stop or exclamation mark.

Autumn Term week 8 - 2/11/21 - Outdoor Learning Day

This week on Friday it was Outdoor Learning Day. We used the school environment to start our new Science topic - Animals including Humans. For this lesson, we explored the meaning of the words habitat and micro-habitat. We searched our local environment seeing what we can find using micro-scopes to help us investigate further. We found loads of creatures by looking under rocks and logs and were able to see them close up through our micro-scopes. See pictures below.

Autumn Term - Week 7 w/c 18/10/21 - Design and Technology

This week Cranes combined our Science and Design and Technology learning to make our very own fruit kebabs. We learned two new grips for chopping using a knife...the claw and the bridge! We also thought carefully about the safety and hygiene rules we needed to follow to keep ourselves safe when cooking.

Autumn Term Week 6 - WC 11th October

We have had a busy term in Cranes doing lots of writing! In our first writing journey this year we have been looking at autobiographies. We have studied the autobiographies of famous people and looked carefully at the features of this particular piece of text. The children have learnt all about using headings and subheadings to organise their writing whilst also practising writing in full sentences and using punctuation accurately. Our very own autobiographies are displayed proudly in the classroom for all our guests to see. Come in and check them out...

Autumn Term Week 5 w/c 4th October 2021

We have had so much fun doing some amazing Science this week. We have been learning about how to keep our body healthy and we have been thinking about why its important to keep ourselves clean. We used UV lights and 'glitterbug potion' to show how germs collect on our hands. We learnt that when we washed them carefully all the germs came off! However when we just dipped them in water the germs and bacteria were still all over our hands and nails.

See you pictures below...

Autumn Term Week 4 w/c 27th September 2021: Plastic Pirate Workshop

Year 2 experienced another exciting workshop this week. We were visited by Alex from Recycle Devon. The workshop took place in our woodland area. Alex showed us the actions to the 3 Rs (Reduce, Recycle, Reuse) and we talked about why it is important to reduce, recycle and reuse. Then, Cranes were transformed into pirates and 'Captain Alex' led us on an adventure across the seas. Along the way, we saved some sea animals that were trapped or injured by plastic pollution. We chanted a pirate song as we sailed along - "plastic isn't fantastic, save our seas!". The children were fantastic at giving suggestions on how we can take action to prevent plastic pollution to keep the sea animals safe.

Autumn Term Week 3 - WC 20/09/21

One of the best things about being back at school without bubbles is the fact that we get to see all our wonderful teachers. We have Mr Leaman teaching us PE, Mrs Tyson teaching us Dance and Mrs Broderick teaching us Computing. Here is a selection of photos from this week...

Music Workshop Autumn Week 2 wc 13/9/21

Year 2 were lucky enough to be joined by a group of local musicians for a performance and workshop this week. We watched them perform 3 of their favourite songs and then split off into groups to learn the Ukelele. We enjoyed performing the music altogether at the end and sharing what we have learnt with the other classes.

Autumn Term Week 1 - WC 6/9/21

Our very first week in Cranes' class has been a busy one especially as we have had to re-learn the routines of a full back to school life. We have been busy in lessons too! We have enjoyed some Music, Maths, Writing, Geography, Phonics, Reading and Languages already! Below are some picture of our Maths Learning where we have been learning how to make numbers from 0-100. We have also been reminding ourselves of how to write letters the correct size in our handwriting and have shown you some examples below.
