WELCOME TO YEAR 1 BUZZARDS

Buzzards are beautiful, graceful and strong birds of prey. They have to find their own food by hunting, so they constantly have to learn where food can be found and how they can get it. Buzzards learn every day in the same way we do.  Buzzards have fantastic looking and listening skills. These skills are as important to us in our learning as they are to Buzzards in their daily life.

'Be Curious...'

This term we will…

immerse ourselves in the cultures and traditions of Kenya. We will compare and contest what we learn with our lives in Paignton. We will explore the world of plants. This will all cumulate in an exciting learning outcome to share with our parents.  

P.E AND DANCE DAYS

P.E/Dance Days are Monday and Wednesday each week. Please ensure that your child has the correct kit in school all week. We will ensure that they are sent home at the end of every half term.

HOME LEARNING DAYS

Home Learning will be handed out on a Friday and collected in on a Wednesday. This will give you the opportunity to explore aspects of your child's learning if you wish.

Summer Term

Summer Term Curriculum Map

Week Beginning 11th July

The Buzzards had an amazing time designing, building and then evaluating their own boats in Design and Technology this week. We first researched how boats float and the types of materials that would be best to use. Once we had designed our boats we used lots of different materials to make them. We then all had a go at floating them in paddling pools to see which ones floated and which ones sunk before evaluating them ourselves. 

Week beginning 27th June 2022

Paignton Zoo Trip

The Buzzards had a fantastic day on their first school trip together! We were able to find out more about animals from Africa we have been learning about in school. Everyone enjoyed having a packed lunch picnic. We expect there were some very tired legs at the end of the day. Well done Buzzards!

Week beginning 13.6.22

We have continued our science learning about plants and trees. We have looked at non fiction texts and identified common features so we will be able to write our own non fiction texts about frogs next week. We have made the most of the good weather and been outside identifying trees in the school grounds.

Week beginning Tuesday 7th June 2022

The Buzzards have been exploring half and quarter of an amount. They could share groups of seeds between 2 and 4 pots to find half and the quarter of an amount.

In Art we have been making models of animals found in Kenya. We began to decorate then by painting a base colour which we will add patterns and features to. 

Week beginning 23.5.22

We have been busy preparing for our fabulous Jubilee Picnic. the Buzzards have learned a whole school dance as well as a song that Year 1 performed together. We have had lots of fun making decorations. 

Week beginning 16.5.22

Another Busy week in the Buzzards class! During our computing session Mrs Broderick taught use about 'tinkering'. Changing a small thing on a program and seeing or in this case, hearing what happened. In science we have been plant detectives and and observed the types of plants living in our school grounds. We made detailed sketches and list of what we found.  

Week beginning 9.5.22

This week we have extended our maths learning by recording doubles calculations and making groups of objects to show repeated addition. We looked at the work of Artist Henry Moore. The children discussed his semi-abstract sculptures and took inspiration for their own animal sculptures they will start to create in the next few weeks.  

Week Beginning 2.05.22 

This week in the Buzzard's we have continued our on learning on the book. Don't Spill the Milk. We have retold the story, created large scale story maps, edited parts of the story and then made our own books. The children especially enjoyed working in partners to make the large maps for our working wall. In Maths We have been making arrays and using them to help us add equal groups together. As part of our Geography learning we have been looking at the country Africa and making comparisons to where we live. 

WB 25.4.22

This week our new topic has been launched, 'Be Curious'. Our teachers were sent a video, some music and a story and we have been tasked with finding out all about Mombasa in Africa. 

The Buzzards have been practicing counting in 5's. This is something lots of us have been finding a challenge but using our resilience we know we will master this skill. In phonics we continue to apply our grapheme knowledge to read and sort real and alien words. 

Week Beginning 28.03.22

In Buzzard's this week we have been learning about capacity and volume. We have been filling up different sized containers  and then comparing the amounts. We had brilliant fun try to fill a cup to the top without spilling any!

Week Beginning 7.3.22

Another busy week in the Buzzards classroom. In Maths we have been learning to compare and measure lengths. There has been lots of fantastic maths vocabulary - taller, shorter, longer and equal to. In Art they have been learning to mix colours to create their own painting masterpieces. This week in Gymnastics the Buzzards have been perfecting their 'exploding egg rolls'.

4.3.22                        NUMBOTS CHAMPIONS!!!!!!

The Buzzards have the highest class score in Numbots this week and will be displaying the trophy in our classroom. Well done Buzzards!

Week beginning 28.2.22

This week we celebrated World Book Day! The Buzzards enjoyed dressing up and sharing their favourite books. We were able to team up with Kites class and read together which everyone enjoyed.

Week Beginning 14.02.22

This week we have continued our learning around Chinese New Year celebrations. The children made their own dancing dragons to parade around the classroom. 

Week Beginning 7.02.22

This week as part of our writing journey we have been researching information all about Chinese New Year! We have started to write some non chronological reports on the different things we have found out and we are also going to make our own dragons. 

Week Beginning 1.02.22

This week we finished writing our own versions of 'The Enormous Turnip' story. We edited the veg that the farmer tried to pull out of the ground and also some of the characters who helped him.

Week beginning 24.1.22

Our Maths learning this week has been addition. The Buzzards have solved word problems to help out a farm and really enjoyed applying their knowledge to dice addition games. 

Week Beginning 17.01.22

This week we were shocked to find that our classroom had been filled with vegetables. We also received an email from the farmer from the enormous turnip story who told us he was sick of turnips and asked us to help him come up with a new story with some new veg. We have started thinking up ideas for our stories this week. 

Week beginning 17.01.22

This week the Buzzards have been learning to retell the story, The Enormous Turnip. They have been immersed in the story by sequencing pictures on a story mountain, retelling the story with puppets, putting themselves in to the roles of different characters and using actions during a class retelling. 

Week Beginning 10.01.22

This week in the Buzzards we have enjoyed learning all the new facts about continents and different oceans. As part of our topic we have been learning a song about the continents in assemblies and in the classroom we have been using our mini-me's to find hot and cold countries on a map. 

Week Beginning 03.01.22 

The children in Buzzard's have enjoyed learning about the story The Train Ride in their writing lessons. We had a go at retelling the story as a class and came up with our actions to support this.

Week beginning 13.12.21

The Buzzards enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner celebration on Tuesday. Crackers were pulled, jokes told and there were some very full bellies during the afternoon. 

On Wednesday everyone presented their Golden Tickets at the classroom door and we set off on a magical Polar Express adventure day in the classroom. The children enjoyed listening to the story whilst sipping hot chocolate and munching on cookies they decorated themselves. The created story maps to retell the journey we went on and received their first gifts of Christmas, a golden bell. Just like the story. 

Week Beginning 29.11.21

Christmas preparation has well and truely begun in the Buzzard's class. We have been making and writing Christmas cards and lists, making decorations for the classroom, writing Christmas jokes and measuring and wrapping presents. 

Week Beginning 22.11.21

In Maths this week we have been using the 'Rekenreks' to help us find the answer to subtraction problems. We have also been using cubes to represent different objects and then recorded our own take away problems. 

Week Beginning 15.11.21

The Buzzard's had a brilliant time dressing up in their own clothes and completing a class work out for Children in Need. They answered the different quiz questions whilst doing lots of different exercises. We were very warn out by the end of the session!

Week beginning 8.11.21

In dance this week the Buzzards have been exploring a prehistoric jungle! They have travelled under, over and through safely and confidently. The children took turns taking on the role of the jungle and explorers. 

Week Beginning 01.11.21

This week in Maths in the Buzzard's we have been learning to partition numbers. We have been taking a whole number and then finding ways of making it with 2 numbers. We chose whole numbers on logs and then used different resources to make the 2 different parts. 

Week Beginning 11.10.21

This week it was the Buzzard's turn to explore the sounds, smell, feel and taste of popcorn! We had a go at describing the popcorn in its different states and talked about what changes we noticed once we had put it in the microwave! We then wrote down the different words we used to describe the popcorn to share on our learning wall. 

Week Beginning 4.10.21

During our phonics lessons this week the Buzzards have been identifying real and alien words. They have used their skills as digraph and trigraph detectives to blend words and decide if they are words they know or words that have been made up. We went on a real and alien words hunt around the classroom and created lists of the words we found.

During independent learning time some of the children have been creating maps of the school showing all the places that are meaningful to them. The dining hall, dance studio and computing suite were all popular places to include. This learning is related to our 'Free to be me' and Geography learning journeys as the children explore more of the school building and the people in it this year.

Week Beginning - 27.09.21

This week in the Buzzard's we have been learning to retell The Gingerbread Man story. We have been acting the story out, retelling the show with puppets, making our own gingerbread men and then writing different segments from the story using pictures as prompts. 

Week Beginning 20.09

This week in the Buzzard's we have focused our learning on Maths on 1 more and 1 less. We have completed different activities in Continuous Provision including making our very own 1 more and 1 less machine to use outside! As part of Recycling Week we took in a 'Plastic Pirates' workshop and learnt all about taking care of our environment. 

Week beginning 13.09.21

This week the Buzzards had their first lessons with White Rock's specialist teachers. On Monday afternoon they met Mr Leaman for PE. On Tuesday they were joined by Mrs Folkes for Music. On Wednesday they went to the dance studio with Mrs Tyson and to the Computing suite with Mrs Broderick. Everyone enjoyed these new learning experiences and can't wait to find out what they will be learning next week. 

Week Beginning 6.09.21

The Buzzard's have all settled beautifully into Year 1. We have spent the first few days exploring our new classroom environment as well as learning some new school routines like eating in the lunch hall all together and going out on the playground with the rest of our year.
