WHITE ROCK IN THE COMMUNITY

In the Community Art work

Have you seen the beautiful art work created by Year 6 on the Year 5 Mezzanine?
They have used recycled materials such as plastic bags and straws to create lovely shapes and patterns. This is to highlight the issues of plastic pollution in our oceans and marine life. The Year 6 pupils have used images from around our community to create this magnificent art

work.

Wednesday 5th December 2018: Choir in the community.

We had a wonderful time today singing a repertoire of Christmas favourites at Primley Court Nursing Home in Paignton. The residents look forward to our visit each year and we really enjoyed that some of them were able to remember the tunes and join in with clapping along, singing, playing percussion instruments or dancing.

Wednesday 7th December 2016:  Choir performance at South Devon College's Christmas Market

It was a pleasure to perform - for the third year running - for South Devon College's Christmas Market. Members o the public attended and it was great to hear them sing along to some well known Christmas favourites. This was a chance for the college to invite atteliers, who were skilled at crafts, to have stalls at their annual market and proved very popular with a wide cross-section of our local community.

CAREERS CURRICULUM

White Rock Primary School recently held a 2 week Careers Curriculum. The focus of the fortnight was to educate the pupils about the different professions and career paths available to them and to identify the skills and strengths that they will need in order to be able to fulfill those roles in the future.

Members of the parent body, as well as local volunteers, kindly gave up their free time to talk to the children about their profession and what their job entails. Visitors included a chiropractor, a satellite installation engineer, a hotel manager, members of the NHS, a yoga instructor, a paramedic, a police officer, a businesswoman who runs two companies - an iphone fixing business and a gate manufacturing business, a physiotherapist, a member of the BBC and a member of an airline cabin crew.

One year 4 pupil said 'The Careers Curriculum was very enjoyable. The different visitors inspired me to think about what I would like to do as a job when I'm older. I also found out about jobs I never knew existed.'

Tuesday 5th July - White Rock Primary School - Torbay Primary Maths Challenge Winners AND Runners-up!

On Tuesday 5th July, 8 pupils fro Year 6 went to Torquay Boys Grammar School to participate in a Maths Challenge against other local primary schools.  The 8 pupils were split into 2 teams and had to complete various Maths challenges in a specified time.  The White Rock pupils performed brilliantly under pressure and were awarded first place and runners up. We are all extremely proud of their achievements!

White Rock pupil raises £86 for Rowcroft Hospice

Eleanor had a cake sale last week and raised £86 in aid of Rowcroft Hospice. Not only that, but she also took part in the Night Walk at the weekend, and even spoke to BBC Radio 2's Simon Mayo about her fundraising to raise awareness for the cause. Well done Eleanor! Keep up the good work!

Swimming Gala at Brixham pool - Saturday 25th June 2016

27 children from Years 3 - 6 volunteered to represent White Rock at the annual swimming gala yesterday at Brixham pool. All children who participated were amazing and should feel very proud of themselves. We swam against children from two other primary schools and the competition was fierce with all swimmers giving their very, very best. In the end, there was only 4 points in it and White Rock came an extremely commendable second place. A huge well done and thank you to  everybody, including parents, who attended this event - roll on next year!

Thursday 19th May 2016: Devon County Show

We were thrilled to perform with our choir and dance group at the county show. Despite the rainy conditions during the performance we managed to draw a crowd and it did not dampen our spirits. We had a wonderful day exploring the show and it was also very special to be the first school from Torbay to perform there.

Parent/Carer Lunches

Our recent parent/carer lunches have been a huge success. Each Wednesday all parents and carers from one year group  are invited into school to have cooked lunch with their children. Siblings and other family members are also invited to join them. The children have enjoyed sharing their lunchtime experience with adults and the adults have lots of positive things to say about lunchtimes at White Rock.

'It’s amazing to be invited in to share lunch with Allissia, a real privilege. Her friends have all come over as well. It’s been lovely. The food is much better than we had when we were at school.'

'It's great to see what they children do at lunchtime, how they behave and to find out more about the food they are eating.'

Choir and dance perform to honour the Queen's 90th birthday

It was a real honour to perform at South Devon College this evening for over 85 guests who had come together to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's 90th birthday. Our choir and dance group worked extremely hard in preparing a suitable programme as a prelude to a gala dinner at the college.  Local dignitaries and the public seated themselves in the theatre and gave the ensemble rapturous applause. We had wonderful reviews and the organiser wrote to us and said: 'You should be very proud of what you all achieved on Wednesday and I am really honoured and privileged to have had you at the performance.'

27th January:  Holocaust Memorial Concert

Our Year 5/6 choir joined together with other schools today to sing at the United Reformed Church in Exeter.  This was to commemorate the six million Jews who died as a result of the Holocaust and to also make a stand against genocide.

The performance was very moving and featured a song by the composer Stephen Melzack.  He made a trip from London to watch the performance of his composition.  One of our Year 5 students was selected out of all the schools to sing a solo and it was a very touching moment in the concert.

Wednesday 16th December 2015: Choir's performance at Primley Court Nursing Home

Today the Year 5 and 6 members of the school choir visited Primley Court Nursing Home to sing some Christmas songs to them.  This is the second year running we have performed at Primley Court and it was very well received.  The residents sang and clapped along as the choir brought back fond Christmas memories for them.  It was wonderful for the choir to see the wonderful effect their music had on the audience members.  It really brought Christmas to them through their singing.

Thursday 10th December 2015: Performance at the Memory Café

Our Key Stage Two choir and cheerleaders visited the Memory Café in Paignton today to perform for their Christmas gathering.  The memory café is an extremely essential resource in the local community for people who have dementia and for their families and carers to come together. It runs social events too to ensure that sufferers and their families feel they are not alone. The choir and the cheerleaders put on a great concert and it was thoroughly enjoyed by the whole audience. The organiser of the café stated:

'Many thanks for a magical afternoon, we all really enjoyed the cheer leaders, and the choirs special brand of entertainment.'

Tuesday 8th December 2015 - Riviera Christmas Charity Concert

Tonight our Year 5/6 choir sang at the Riviera Christmas Charity Concert at the Riviera Centre in Torquay.  This was a collaborative performance alongside five other primary schools in Torbay.  The choir have been rehearsing each Tuesday evening towards this event and tonight saw the choir, for the first time, rehearse with the other schools as one huge choir!  This took a lot of concentration to sing with so many other children.  It was a wonderful evening.  Sharing the stage with the choir was the Brixham, all male, Orpheus choir. The choir joined the very large audience in singing carols, embellished by the wonderful sounds of Riviera Brass. One of the highlights of the evening for the choir was to be greeted by the Chairman of Torbay.

Next year the Year 5/6 choir will join forces again with the other primary schools in a special trip to London to sing for the Holocaust Memorial Concert.

On Tuesday 1st December, our talented choir sang at South Devon College for their Christmas Market. The children performed brilliantly and sang renditions of Jingle Bells, Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer and We Wish You a Merry Christmas and many, many, more. For many of the onlooking crowd, it marked the beginning of Christmas! Well done choir!

FRIDAY 23rd OCTOBER - CANCER RESEARCH FUNDRAISING DAY

On Friday 23rd October, three year 6 girls organised a fundraising day for Cancer Research. Children came to school wearing either pink or blue and took part in a fun-filled afternoon of games in the hall. The school raised an incredible £390 for this great charity. The girls took the funds directly to the Cancer Research shop in Paignton who were extremely grateful!

Mad Mascot's Tea Party

We were invited to represent our school at a local community charity event at Beverley Holiday park. The children were a credit to our school and enjoyed the fun games and events that were organised by local attractions. They even got to sample the 'Bake-off' cakes! They were delicious!

White Rock to embark on an 'out of this world' educational project

During the summer holidays, two kilograms of seeds took off from Florida bound for the International Space Station. After several months on board, the seeds will be sent back down to Earth and then packaged with identical seeds that have stayed on Earth.

White Rock are hoping to receive two packets of these seeds to grow in school. We will embark on a voyage of discovery to see what growing plants in space can teach us about life on Earth and whether we can sustain human life in space through the production of our own food.

We will put our data on a national online database so that our results can be compared across schools in the UK.

Alpaca Trail

Our Alpaca amazing Alpaca, covered in Andy Wahol pop art inspired portraits of every child in the school, is in place by the front gate. Enjoy visiting other Alpaca's on the 'Torbay Alpaca Trail' over the Summer.
