WELCOME TO YEAR 1 BUNTINGS
Buntings are a family of birds that includes the Cirl Bunting. This bird is very rare and can be found by the coast in South Devon. Just like us! Many Buntings are long distant migrants which means they travel many miles around the world every year. Just like we will be doing in our learning in this Term's theme!
THIS TERMS THEME

This term we will immerse ourselves in the cultures and traditions of Kenya. We will compare and contrast what we learn about Kenya with our lives in Paignton. We will explore the world of plants and go on a trip to Paignton Zoo. This will culminate with an exciting learning celebration to share with our parents.
P.E AND DANCE DAYS
P.E/Dance Days are Wednesday each week. Please ensure that your child has the correct kit in school all week. We will ensure that they are sent home at the end of every half term.

Tuesday 7th May 2024 - Dance
We have been learning Dance this term through the story of Giraffe's Can't Dance. We began by all becoming Gerald, who thought he could not dance, but then by the end of the book he was able to because... "We all can dance when we find music that we love." We have then tried the different dance styles that the other animals dance. One week we learnt the waltz, as "the warthogs started waltzing"; then we learnt the tango, as "the lions danced a tango which was elegant and bold". Next week we are going to be learning the cha cha as "the chimps all did a cha cha with a very latin feel".

Tuesday 30th April - Physical Education
Athletics is the Year 1 focus this half term, with the children from Buntings learning about relays and how to safely changeover the baton. They learned all about 'chase relays' and how it is important to transfer the baton from one runner to the next quickly to try and catch the other teams. They understood the techniques and tactics well and all teams were able to be successful.
Monday 29th April 2024- Geography- African Artefacts
Today Year 1 discovered some African Artefacts in Buntings classroom. We found some patterned material, a tea pot, a fan which also doubles up as a fly squat and a beaded necklace. We watched a clip of a safari in African and named the different animals that live in Africa. We then went onto Google Maps to find where Paignton is and compared this to where Mombasa is and discussed how we would travel there.
Monday 22nd April 2024- Science- Plants
This week, we have started our new Science learning all about plants. We started our learning off by drawing what we thought would happen to a seed if we planted it. We then had a go at planting our own bean seeds. We are going to use our observational skills to watch them grow each week. We were then tasked with finding out the name of different flowers and plants, so we went on a hunt around the school grounds to see what we could find! Have a look at our Science photos so far.

We also performed a short piece of music using the glockenspiels. Finally, we showed our parents our own collages of the Titanic and then they had a go at making their own with our careful supervision. Everyone had a wonderful time and our parents were very impressed with our fabulous learning.

We have been really enjoying our Gymnastics lessons this half term. This week we were practising jumping and landing with bent knees. We also recapped our shapes, remembering to squeeze our muscles to make a strong shape. Stretching is important in Gymnastics too, so we always make sure we stretch our muscles so we don't injure ourselves.

In Writing this week, we have started to read our new class text 'Don't Spill the Milk!' On Tuesday, we went on our very own journey of 'Don't Spill the Paint!' As we walked through the school, we chanted 'Walk tall, walk steady through the corridor, don't quiver, don't fall off the trim trail, left foot right foot all the way up the stairs, finally we got back to the classroom when...SPLOSH, a big football landed in the tin.' We had so much fun going on our very own journey and luckily Mrs Walker didn't spill the paint!

What a busy week we have had in Year One! On Monday, we had our History/Writing experience day. For this, we transformed the three classes into 1st,2nd and 3rd class. The children then used role play to imagine what life was like on board the greatest ship of that era! We will be using our History knowledge and skills to inform our writing-this will be a non-fiction page all about the Titanic.
On Tuesday, we held our second Phonics workshop and parents listened to a short talk about the Phonics journey so far and were given information about the Phonics Screening Check. The parents then came to watch our lessons and were so impressed with our amazing learning behaviours. Well done Year One!

We are going to be looking more closely at Matisse's work and making collages our own collage pictures of the Titanic later on in the term. This will link with our History learning about the events that took place the night the Titanic sank.

One of us made a number up to 10 on our tens frame and our partner made the number that is 10 more on their tens frame. We then rolled a dice and took that number away from each of our numbers. After we looked at our number and our partner's number to see if we could spot a pattern.

Wednesday 24th January 2024 - Dance
We have been learning about African dance and trying to create our own short dances. This week we watched some traditional African dances and used this as inspiration for our own short dances. We had to work with a partner to include two poses from pictures and link them together with a travelling move (like a turn, jump, walk or roll). We found this quite tricky so are going to practise this some more next week.

In Dance, we are learning dance styles from the past. So far we have learnt the Hand Jive and Rock and Roll from the 1950s and the Twist from the 1960s. When learning the Hand Jive, we had to watch Mrs Tyson really closely to copy the moves as they were quite quick. The Twist was great fun to learn as we had to wiggle our hips while bending our knees and lowering ourselves down and then coming back up. We also had to balance on one leg and lift the other leg up while twisting! Next week we are going to learn some moves from the dance 'Night Fever', which is a famous dance from the 1970s.
