White Rock Primary School

'Inspiring Learning Together'

White Rock Primary School

Physical Education at White Rock

Intent:

PE at White Rock is a dynamic and varied programme of activity that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in sport, competition, and other physically demanding activities.

Children are actively engaged to learn the fundamental motor skills that enable the development of the competence that creates confidence. This leads to safe and successful participation in a wide range of sports and activities.

PE provides opportunities for pupils to improve their fitness and to become physically confident in a way that supports long-term, healthy lifestyles that includes good nutrition.

Outdoor Education, within the ‘Reach Outdoors’ programme promotes personal development whilst learning outside the classroom. Developing skills to be used in and on the sea and using our local environment, it encourages independent learning and decision making, whilst building confidence, co-operation and resilience. This links closely to the swimming programme which is delivered to all children within the school.

Experiences gained in PE, sport and other activities at White Rock Primary School build character and help to embed values such as teamwork, leadership, fairness and respect. Children learn to deal with both success and defeat, in lessons, in house competition, and at a fixture or festival representing the school.

WHITE ROCK P.E KIT EXPECTATIONS

Although each class has a specific day for their PE and Dance lessons, it is sometimes necessary to change the timetable. This means these lessons may take place on a day when your child will not be expecting it. It is required that each child have their kit in school for the full week.

PE kit should consist of:

  • A House coloured t-shirt, White Rock logo on front, House name on back.
  • A pair of dark colour shorts.
  • White socks (not school tights).
  • Trainers. (Please ensure if you send your child in with laces they are able to do their own shoes up).
  • Plimsolls are acceptable, but are not ideal for outside sports due to their lack of grip.
  • Girls and boys with long hair must have this tied back away from the face.
  • Earrings must be removed for every lesson.

Dark colour tracksuits may be added to kit bags as extra kit during winter term, and may be worn at the discretion of the teacher if the lesson is outside.

This is not instead of normal PE kit as children are expected to be in shorts for indoor PE.

For Extra Curricular sports clubs, children do not have to wear their PE kit, but should be appropriately dressed for the sport they will be participating in. Please read the clubs letter carefully each half term to ensure the correct kit is available (e.g. boots and shin pads for football)

Lastly, please ensure ALL PE and clubs kit is clearly named as it makes it much easier to reunite children with the correct kit!

DARTMOOR PARTNERSHIP TOUCH RUGBY FINALS 2022

Three teams travelled to South Dartmoor Community College to compete in the whole Partnership touch rugby finals having qualified from the local competitions.

The Year 3&4 team played every other school that qualified in a big round robin tournament - finishing an excellent second and getting silver medals.

We had two teams qualify to play in  the Y5/6 tournament which was played at a very high standard. White Rock Lions played exceptionally well, learned a huge amount and finished fourth in a tough pool.

The White Rock Tigers were outstanding throughout. They qualified for the Grand Final as Pool winners, where they were in complete control against a good Rydon team. They won 2-0 and became tournament winners and gold medallists. Their team play and togetherness was outstanding, with no other team scoring against them for the whole tournament!

Year 5 Orienteering

Year 5 are currently learning the skills of orientating a map and being able to use landmarks and reference points to accurately make their own maps. They will soon be using these skills to find and follow trails across the school grounds in the fastest time they can!

Sports Captains Planning Active Lunchtimes

The 16 newly appointed House Sports Captains are hard at work planning a series of active lunchtime games they would like to play with the children in KS1 after half term. They have some great ideas and are working well as a team, and it will be great to see their planning in action.

Year 3 Children learning fundamental skills of Touch Rugby.

Year 3 have been introduced to Touch Rugby in PE. They have been learning the specific techniques of passing and catching a different shaped ball, and are working exceptionally hard to understand the unique, and sometimes confusing tactic of 'run forward but pass backwards'.

Dartmoor 3 Ball Finals

Both of the Year 4 teams and the Year 5/6 teams qualified for the finals of the Dartmoor 3 Ball Competition, so Mr Leaman and Mrs Tyson took 32 White Rock children to the event this week. All children showed excellent batting and fielding skills and fantastic teamwork which resulted in the Year 4 Tigers coming runners up in the final and the Year 5/6 Tigers coming first in their finals. Our other two teams, the Lions did very well as well, finishing 4th and 5th. Well done to everyone who took part.

Year 4 Dartmoor 3 Ball Competition

Some of our Year 4's had a fantastic opportunity to take part in a Dartmoor 3 Ball competition against two other schools. We had two teams, one in each of the leagues and our Year 4s showed great enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the event. At the end of the morning, all the teams came together for the results and both our Year 4 teams won the two different leagues! Congratulations to all of them and best of luck for the final in a few weeks!

Girls' Challenge Festival

23 girls from Years 5&6 had the opportunity to take part in Challenge Festival organised by the Dartmoor SSP, but run by our amazing Sports Captains.

There were six PE based activities to have a go at, with the aim to do your best and improve your score every time you tried. All the girls had great fun inspiring their friends and achieving some great performances. Well done to all involved.

Special thanks must go to the 10 amazing Year 6s who facilitated the event. Their organisation and leadership were a credit to themselves and the school, and we look forward to them organising more events in the future.

Year 6 Sports Captains Leadership Day

Our newly appointed House Sports Captains enjoyed an excellent day with Tammi Lethbridge from the Dartmoor School Sport Partnership. The focus was sports leadership and how to create playtime opportunities for all children at White Rock. An excellent day, enjoyed by all!

Year 5 at Reach Outdoors Climbing Wall

Year 5 have started their latest block of learning with Reach Outdoors at the Parkfield indoor climbing wall. There has been plenty of challenges to overcome in all aspects of climbing, with all the children being able to achieve their personal goals.

Paignton League Football 2019-2020

This year's Paignton league football has now started for our representative teams for Years 5&6 and Years 3&4. Now extended to include teams from Brixham, the league is now more competitve than ever.

Year 5&6 started with one win and one loss from round one, but improved with every minute they played. With two more rounds to go they have every chance of making the top three play offs.

The Year 3&4 team played together for the very first time, played superbly well as a team, and enjoyed an excellent evening winning both of their fixtures to sit top of the league after one round.

Well done to all involved - you did yourselves and your school proud!

Dartmoor School Sport Partnership Year 3/4 Gymnastics Competition

On Tuesday 3rd March, some of our Year 3 and 4 children had the opportunity to take part in a Gymnastics competition at KEVICCs in Totnes with other schools. All the children had a great time and demonstrated excellent Gymnastics skills, both with the floor routine and using the vault. The A team came runners up and are through to the finals on Monday 16th March. The children were a credit to White Rock as always. Well done to all of them.

Year 6 PE Theory Lessons

Year 6 have been receiving extended PE lessons this year, allowing the delivery of a theory session at the start of each.

They now conduct a three-stage warm up at the start of each lesson themselves, can make it sport specific, and understand the reasons for doing so. They are also able to name and locate the major muscles and bones in the body and understand how they work and help us move.

SEND Primary FUN Festival

Eight of our Key Stage 2 children got the opportunity to attend a Primary FUN festival at KEVICCs in Totnes along with children from other schools. They had a great morning representing White Rock and especially enjoyed the assault course (as you can see from the photographs!). Well done to all of you - you were fantastic!

Round 1 - Totnes Learning Community Football League.

 An Unbeaten Start!

Congratulations to the 11 players that made up the squad for the Y5/6 team that will play in the Totnes Learning Community League this season.

Four games were played in round one, with White Rock earning two victories and two draws. A very solid start to the season - well done to all players!

ALDI'S KIT FOR SCHOOLS STICKERS

Mr Leaman is doing a bit of modelling again...

We are collecting Team GB stickers with Aldi's kit for schools. Help us collect 300 stickers to complete our poster and we'll receive an exclusive sports kit, plus a chance to win £20,000!!!!

The poster will be displayed at the back of the library in an easy accessible place. This is so you can send the stickers into school with your children and they can add the stickers to the poster themselves during break and lunch time or at the end of the day. When stickers are added there are little challenges the children can do, such as "Think of a snack that is good for a day at school" or " Arrive/Leave Assembly like a rock climber". This will help our children think more actively about a healthy life style.

We have two posters already but if we exceed that we can always ask for more! Let's get as many stickers as we can and absolutely SMASH this competition!

Go to your local Aldi store to collect TODAY!

UPDATE: Huge thanks to everybody that helped! We managed to completely fill two posters with over 600 stickers which is an amazing effort! Posters have been sent back to Aldi and we await delivery of our two sports packs, and fingers crossed for the £20,000 draw prize!

WHITE ROCK GETS GOLD!

We are delighted to announce that we, White Rock Primary School, have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2018/19 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

Our sporting achievements this year are too many to list, but highlights include success at Devon level at the Year 4 Quadkids athletics, at Partnership level in athletics, handball and tag rugby at A team to D team level. Our Year 4 team won the Paignton Football league, with the Year 6 team runners up in the KEVICC league. Attendance at various SEND festivals has also been an amazing experience for those children.

And who could forget Sports Day and Nursery Sports Day? Over 600 children competing for their houses with Brunel lifting the trophy again this year.

As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.

A special thanks must go to all of the children who have contributed to the gaining of this award this year. We look forward to applying once again in 2020!

YEAR 5/6 ATHLETICS SUCCESS

Congratulations to the Year 5 athletics team who achieved 4th place at the Totnes Community Athletics Championships. This is a great result as they were competing against other teams of Year 6 children, and will give them good experience for next year. Very well done to all involved for your great efforts!

DEVON SCHOOLS GAMES SUCCESS

FOR YEAR 4 ATHLETES

The Year 4 Quad Kids Athletics team represented the Dartmoor School Sports Partnership at the Devon Summer Games held at Exeter Arena. Having won the two previous qualifying rounds, this event put the children up against the best the rest of Devon had to offer.

16 teams competed in a 50m sprint, a throw, a jump and a 400m distance race. The White Rock team did us proud with their efforts, finishing in an amazing 5th place!  Very well done to all involved!

Tag Rugby Tournament

at Newton Abbot RFC

White Rock were represented by two teams who enjoyed a full day of competitive tag rugby involving schools from across the Dartmoor Partnership. The Year 5&6 team worked exceptionally hard all day in a tough competition ending up 6th of the 13 schools entered. Well done to all involved with this team, especially the girls who improved immensely with every game.

The Year 4 team had an excellent tournament. All group games were won comfortably putting them through to the final against Bradley Barton. An excellent game saw both team score plenty of tries, but White Rock showed more quality as a team and came away victorious at full time. Well done to this team, and to Mr. Hobson for his inspirational coaching.
