White Rock Primary School

WELCOME TO YEAR 6 EAGLES

Eagles are highflyers, tenacious hunters and have excellent vision. Once they have a goal in mind, they strive to obtain it and never let it slip through their talons. As King of Skies, they soar high with ambition and innovation.

THIS TERM'S THEME

'Free To Be Me'

In Year 6, we will be focusing on celebrating ourselves and explaining the role we play in society. We will consider how others may experience prejudice based on differences they may have. We will celebrate these differences by showing empathy, patience, and tolerance.

P.E AND DANCE DAYS

Dance for Eagles will be on a Wednesday and PE will be on a Friday. Please ensure your child comes to school with the correct kit, which is clearly labelled. For more information about kit requirements, please visit our 'Physical Education & School Sport' Page.
We will ensure that PE kits are sent home at the end of every half term.

HOME LEARNING DAYS

Home learning will be sent home on Fridays and should be returned to school on Wednesday. Home learning should be completed to the best standard possible and Mathletics and Times Table Rock Stars should also be completed weekly. We celebrate the efforts of Mathletics and Times Table Rock Stars in our assemblies with special class shout outs and certificates.

Wednesday 21st January 2026 - History

In History, we looked at how the Maya civilisation developed during their time period.  We created timelines with the key events including: when cities were formed; when the first Maya writing was introduced; the introduction of a monarchy where city-states were ruled by kings and finally when the Maya civilisation started to decline.

Wednesday 14th January 2026 - Drumba

This half term in Dance we are learning Drumba. This is a fusion of music and physical exercise involving high energy movements and developing rhythm and co-ordination. We are really enjoying this and everyone is making great progress to improve their fitness and timing using the drumsticks.

Wednesday 14th January 2026 - Science

We began our new Science unit, 'Evolution and Inheritance', this week. As part of our learning, we discussed the life of Mary Anning, a palaeontologist, who discovered crucial fossils including the first complete Ichthyosaur skeleton. We put our observational skills to the test and looked at photographs of three fossils to deduce as much as we could about what the organism may have been like, using evidence that we could see.

Friday 9th January 2026 - Art

We started our new Art unit by testing our skills of sculpture.  We used pipe cleaners, tin foil and clay to try to replicate an emotion or movement that we had created using a mannequin.  We tried use our previous knowledge of sculpture to help us.  We discussed what worked well and what skills we need to develop before our final piece.

Thursday 13th November 2025 - Design and Technology

This week in Design and Technology, we worked in groups to make our Halloween Puffs.  We each chose our filling from the following choices - pizza, jam or chocolate and added it to our puff pastry.  We followed a set of instructions to ensure that we were successful with our product.  To ensure we were successful, we taste-tested our Halloween Puffs once they were cooked.  They were thoroughly enjoyed by many!

Thursday 6th November 2025 – Reading Roundabout

We took part in a reading roundabout. Jade, who works at the Devon Library service, brought in some books to share with us. She picked six different genres: Imaginary worlds, Animals, Realistic stories, Funny, Fascinating Facts, plus Adventure and Mystery. We got a chance to look through the selection of fantastic books and see which ones we would like to add to our library.

Jade asked us some questions about how we pick books and how we might find new books to read. We discussed flicking through the book, reading the blurb and reading the first page where the author is trying to bring you into the story. We also thought that being familiar with the author also helps when picking a text. Some of us discussed which books we were looking forward to reading and why. We can't wait to have these books added into our library soon!

Thursday 23rd October 2025- PE

This half term year 6 have been focusing on tag rugby. They have been developing their attacking skills by using the correct passing technique and working as a team. They have also practised effective tagging techniques to help with their defending skills.

Wednesday 8th October 2025 - Dance

We have been learning Greek dancing this term in our dance lessons. We have watched some traditional Greek dances and learnt some basic steps to create a group dance to the famous Greek music called 'Zorba the Greek'. This week, we have learnt the Hasapiko dance and included that into our routines, along with remembering to use different formations. We filmed our dances and watched them back so we could see what we needed to do to improve them.

Friday 3rd October 2025 - Coasteering - Reach Outdoors

Over the last couple of weeks Year 6 got together with Reach Outdoors.  We put on our wetsuits, buoyancy aids and helmets and headed down to the picturesque Churston Cove.  We were brilliant at showing our bravery and water-confidence skills.  We then swam around to Fishcombe Cove and carried out some activities including jumping off rocks into the sea.  We were all incredible - showing how supportive we can be and our positive attitudes.

Friday 26th September 2025 – Science

During our Science sessions we are learning about different components of our blood. We completed a pattern seeking enquiry to answer this question:

How does the size of the blood vessel effect the blood flow?

We collected some results and made observations.

Thursday 4th September 2026 - Class Reader

Mrs Cliff is reading 'Holes' by Louis Sachar to Eagles this term. We looked at the front cover and the blurb together during our transition day in July. We made some predictions and listened to the first few chapters.
