SUMMER TERM

Thursday 2nd May 2024 - PSHE

Today we were lucky enough to have a visit from our local PCSO. Lisa told us that in an emergency we must ring 999. If it is not an emergency, we can ring 101 and we'll get to speak to Lisa or one of her colleagues. Lisa described how she helps people in our local community, for a variety of reasons. She said that you are never alone, there are many ways that people can help each other.

Lisa said that after the age of ten, if you continue to make the wrong choices and break the law, you might get a criminal record. One of the consequences of this is that we would not then be allowed to go abroad for a holiday or to work. We promised her that we would listen to the little voice in our head that we hear when we are tempted to make the wrong choice. Lisa explained that if we think our parents would disapprove, then we must not commit the crime!

Wednesday 1st May 2024

We had an exciting morning at White Rock Primary School today!  We had the pleasure of listening to a brass ensemble from HM Band of the Royal Marines (Lymstone).  It was a fantastic interactive music opportunity and all pupils and staff loved it!

Wednesday 24th April 2024- Spanish

Year 3 had lots of fun during their Spanish lesson this week! We started to learn weather phrases. (El Tiempo)

We played lots of interactive games to practise the new vocabulary.

Here is the vocabulary to practise at home: Say each phrase 3 times and write them on post-it notes around the house! This is a great method for learning new Spanish words. We ended the lesson with a fun Spanish wordsearch.smiley

Hace frio= it's cold

Hace buen tiempo= It's good weather

Hace mal tiempo= it's bad weather

Hay niebla= it's foggy

Hay tormenta= it's stormy

llueve= it's raining

nieva= it's snowing

Thursday 18th April 2024 - Music

What a great morning Year 3 have had! Tom from Rocksteady Music school came in and taught us lots about singing and playing instruments. We know all about electric guitars, bass guitars, drums, electric keyboard and vocalists. We learned the chorus to Queen's 'We Will Rock You' and some of us were actually chosen to be part of Tom's band!

Wednesday 27th March 2024 - Gymnastics

We have been really enjoying our Gymnastics this term and this week we had to include a hoop to our skills we have been learning. The hoop needed to be used in a jump (we could jump in, over, through), a balance (in the hoop, holding the hoop) and a roll (begin in the hoop, holding the hoop). Sometimes we used a friend to hold the hoop so we could jump or roll through it. When performing these Gymnastics skills, we had to remember to tense our muscles and hold our balances for 5 seconds.

Monday 25th march 2024 - Geography

In Geography, we have used atlases to help us identify different counties in England. We know that we live in Devon and that Cornwall, our neighbouring county, is a very pleasant county to visit! We could see in the atlas that they are both coastal counties. We were also able to locate many cities near to us.

Monday 19th March 2024 - History

What do you know about the Romans? We have learned so much that we wanted to share it with our parents and carers! At the end of our learning journeys, we write down as much as we can about the topic we have learned about. Have a look to see what we have remembered!

Tuesday 12th March 2024 - Art

We have been learning about the artists Alfred Wallis and Claude Monet. Look below to see our fabulous sketches. We have tried to use shading and cross hatching to create tone.

Monday 5th March 2024 - Design and Technology

We used our design, build and evaluation skills to make a light up Lego snail! We worked together with our learning partner, asking for pieces and building together. It was fun!

Monday 26th February 2024 - Writing

We are currently learning about the text 'Dare to care for a Dragon'. To help us with our Writing, Rebekah from Silverton Vets came into visit us. She told us about her role as a veterinary nurse and how to care for animals. We learnt how to react to dogs that ew don't know, the importance of microchipping and why it's crucial not to allow a cat or dog to eat the foods we enjoy. We learnt so much! We even got to use a stethoscope and bandage our own poorly pets!

Wednesday 21st February 2024

Year 3 have had lots of fun in their Spanish lesson this week. We started our mini project on the Hungry Caterpillar (La Oruga muy hambriento) in Spanish. Today we learnt the days of the week in Spanish. We played lots of interactive games and sang a rap to practise the new vocabulary.

We have been learning about the Romans and in Dance, have been marching like soldiers and creating stillness using fixed positions representing 'shield' 'fight', 'protect' and 'Testudo'. We used different formations in our dances and also had to think about including different levels.

Wednesday 7th February 2024 - Reading

Year 3 LOVE reading!  We had a fantastic time reading with our reading buddies in Reception.  The children shared their stories with each other and discussed the characters and the reasons as to why they love reading.

Wednesday 31st January 2024 - Physical Education

Year 3 have been aiming to improve their physical fitness levels this half term in PE, alongside learning how our body adapts to the demands of exercise and beginning to name and locate a few muscles. The children have worked extremely hard, finishing off with a game of Unlimited Dodgeball where they could earn their way back into the game by completing a number of exercises. They worked extremely hard and great fun was had by all!

Wednesday 31st January 2024- Mandarin Club

Year 3 have had so much fun at Mandarin club recently. The children have learnt greetings and numbers 1-10 in Mandarin.

We played lots of interactive games to practise the new vocabulary and we made some fabulous word clouds!

Can you say numbers 1-10 in Mandarin Chinese? Have a go!

Tuesday 23rd January 2024 – Reading

Today, Mrs Jackson from the School Library Services came into school to visit Year 3.  She brought in new books for the children to explore that are going to be available to read in the school library.  The books consisted of six different genres: Magical, Realistic, Funny, Wild about Animals, Scary, and Adventure and Mystery.  The children were taught the five-finger test where they read a page and hold up five fingers.  If they are unsure of a word, they put a finger down and if they reach zero then they might need to change their book.  We discussed how to choose a book by looking at the picture, flicking through it, and reading a page to see if it grabs their attention.  We love to read in Year 3!

Wednesday 17th January 2024 - Maths

In Maths this week, we have been learning how to multiply 2-digit by 1-digit numbers with exchange.  The children have used dienes, place value counters and a place chart to support their learning.  We have also learned how to partition numbers when multiplying.  Year 3 are mathematical geniuses!

Wednesday 3rd January 2024 - Bikeability

Today, Michelle from Bikeability came into school. She took assembly and got us to think about why it is important for us to learn how to be safe on the road, when we ride our bikes. Michelle talked to us about what to expect if we take the course and we watched some videos to show what the children were doing, from signalling, shoulder checking and completing a u-turn. How exciting!

If you would like to sign up, there is an online form which has been sent, via email, to parents/carers.

Monday 11th December 2023 - Reading

In Year 3, we LOVE reading! We have been reading lots of chapter books this term and Miss Colledge has read our class read to us everyday. When we walked to Churston library, Michele the librarian told us how we can apply for our own library card. She said we can take out 20 books at a time and keep them for 3 weeks! She also told us about the book quest activities that they run at the library. It encourages us to read more books and collect stickers along the way. How exciting!

Wednesday 6th November 2023-Spanish

This week in Spanish Year 3 have been learning all about Christmas in Spain. "La Navidad". The children learnt 6 Spanish words related to Christmas.

Here is the vocabulary to practise at home! iVamos!

el muneco de nieva= snowman

Papa Noel= Santa

los regalos=presents

La nieva= snowflake

El arbol de navidad= christmas tree

We played lots of interactive games to practise the new vocabulary.

The children really enjoyed learning about El tio de Nadal, a Spanish Christmas tradition. iFantastico!

El Tió de Nadal (a Christmas log in Catalan) is an important part of the Catalan Christmas traditions. It is a piece of a wooden trunk that kids tap with a stick on Christmas Eve or on Christmas day to get presents.

To end our Spanish lesson we sang the song 'Feliz Navidad'. Señorita Head was really impressed with Year 3's  pronunciation. iMaravilloso!

Tuesday 5th December - Learning Celebration

Thank you to all of you who came to see our Learning Celebration. In Science we have been learning all about how to stay healthy and eat the right amount of different types of foods. It is important to eat a variety of foods to keep us healthy including proteins, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, fats and dairy products. We chose foods from these different groups to help us make a healthy sandwich. Look at the fun we had!

Tuesday 28th November 2023 - Computing

We have been learning about computer networks. We went on a tour around our school to find all the devices that connect to one another. We found the server (this stores information), a few network switches (these help transfer information) and lots of wireless network points (these mean we do not have to use wires). We need all these devices to be able to send messages on our computers. We lost count of the amount of laptops, computers and iPads that we have in school!

Wednesday 22nd November 2023 - KS2 Dance Festival

Twelve of our Year 3s were lucky enough to get the opportunity to attend a KS2 Dance Festival at South Dartmoor Community College this afternoon. When we arrived, we got to watch the GCSE Leaders perform the dance that they were going to teach us. We worked in different groups, with children from other schools, to learn the dance which was taught to us by the Dance Leaders. We then performed it altogether. Take a look at the pictures below of the fun we had!

Monday 13th November 2023 - PSHE

Below is a picture of us wearing our brightest, boldest odd socks to celebrate our uniqueness! Odd Sock Day kicked off anti-bullying week where we have been talking about what bullying is and what we can do if ourselves or our friend is in a situation where help is needed.

Monday 6th November 2023 - Science

What a great afternoon we have had tasting different fruits and vegetables!

As part of our Science topic on healthy eating, we are going to make our own healthy wraps. We are currently at the design stage. We tried different foods so that we can decide what to include in our wrap next week.

We were very brave and tried new vegetables that we did not like, our faces told Mrs Proctor, Miss Ballinger and Mrs Bagnall whether we liked them or not!

Some of us liked everything and had clean paper towels!

Friday 3rd November 2023

Over the course of the year, we will be learning our Year 3 spellings.  We do this in a variety of fun ways!  Please take a look at some examples below.

Friday 20th October 2023- Spanish

Year 3 had lots of fun learning pets in Spanish. (Las mascotas)

The children learnt the key structures tengo= I have and no tengo= I do not have to talk about their pets. We played lots of interactive games on the Ipads (maze  chase, open the box, hagman) to practise the new vocabulary.

The children really enjoyed singing the song Tienes una mascota?

Listen to the song below to practise pets in Spanish. Can you make the animal sounds too!!

Wednesday 11th October 2023 - Dance

In Dance, we have been learning about how food is grown and then prepared for eating. Today, we were moving in different ways using dynamics to show how food is cooked. This included: being rice boiling; mashing potatoes (some of us were the potato being mashed); toast popping out of the toaster and pancakes being flipped. It was great fun, as you can see in the photos below.

Thursday 5th October - Religious Education

We have been learning about the Creation Story. The Creation Story is in the book of Genesis 1: 1-24. Genesis is the first book in the Old Testament. We learned what God created on the different days. We decided he definitely needed his rest by the seventh day!

Tuesday 26th September - European Languages Day

Today we celebrated European Languages Day with Senorita Head. We had a whole school assembly where we sang the songs we have been learning in Spanish. We listened to some Year 6 children telling us all about themselves in Spanish. Senorita Head came to our classroom and we learned how to say Hello in Russian - privet, Polish - czesc, French - salut and German - hallo.

Here are the links to the songs we sang.

Monday 18th September 2023 - Science

Today we have been learning about the 3 different types of skeletons - Endoskeleton, Exoskeleton and Hydrostatic skeleton. Animals such as dogs, elephant and humans with a skeleton inside their body have an endoskeleton. Beetles, lobsters and scorpions have their skeleton on the outside of their body so have an exoskeleton. Slugs, worms and Jellyfish do not have a rigid skeleton so they have a Hydrostatic skeleton which is filled with fluid. We classified animals by what type of skeleton they have.  Have a look at which animals have which skeleton type!

Friday 15th September 2023 - Music

In Music this week, we tested the children’s prior knowledge in music and explored new vocabulary.  Year 3 also listened to a Country song, Home is Where the Heart is by Joanna Mangona and Rick Coates.  We discussed how Country music is a popular style of music that originated in the Southern States of America.  The children were able to associate this genre of music to describe people’s lives working on farms and in the countryside.  They enjoyed finding the beat to the song and learning the lyrics.

Our first three days!

We have had an amazing first few days in Year 3! We have done Maths, English, PSHE, Geography, History, Science and practised our spellings. Have a look at our great photos!
