ACADEMIC YEAR 2021/2022

Summer TERM

Summer Term Curriculum Map

Monday 11th July 2022 - Science - Engineers and Inventors week.

We linked our Science theme of Magnets to Engineers and Inventors week. First we learned about magnets and what objects around our classroom were magnetic and non-magnetic. We then designed our own magnetic maze in a bottle. We drew a maze on our bottles, put a paper clip inside and then used a magnet to take the paper clip around the maze. Take a look at our great designs!

Wednesday 6th July 2022 - Dance

We used symbols to create dances and used them to write dance sentences to help us perform our dances. We are then going to use these symbols to create dances linked to our Science learning.

Wednesday 29th June 2022 - Computing

Today in Computing, we have been creating projects in Scratch Junior. Once we had explored all the blocks, we created our own sequences for our chosen sprites.

Thursday 23rd June 2022 - Maths

This week we have continued looking at properties of shapes. We looked at 2d and 3d shapes and their properties. We know what edges, faces and vertices are and can tell you how many each 3d shape has. We also made some 3d shapes from their nets. Some shapes were trickier to make than others!

Monday 13th June 2022 - Maths

Today we started our new Maths topic - Properties of Shapes. Today we learned that an angle is created when two straight lines meet at a point. We used our previous knowledge of turns to describe how an object had turned, clockwise, anticlockwise, quarter turn, half turn, three quarters of a turn and full turn. We took our learning outside to practise this new learning with leaves and sticks. We challenged our learning partners with different turns.

Friday 10th June 2022 - Maths

Today we looked at measuring time in seconds as part of our Maths journey on Time. We closed our eyes and opened them again when we estimated 60 seconds was up. Some of us got really close. We then went outside and timed how many seconds it took us to do star jumps and running around the playground. Have a look at our action shots!

Monday 23rd May 2022 - History

We were fortunate to have the chairman of the Torbay Civic Society, to come in and talk to us about our significant historical figure 'George Soudon Bridgman'. We learnt that he lived in Torbay and was a qualified architect. He set up his own business in Paignton 'Bridgman Architects'. He knew two wealthy men called Singer and Dendy. Dendy built most of the buildings on our seafront. Singer was an American who purchased lots of buildings in the bay. These men were Bridgman's biggest clients. Bridgman's first project was Paignton Pier. He also built the sea wall. The biggest building he designed and built was Oldway Mansion. Of course, he built this for Singer!

Tuesday 17th May 2022 - Science

In our Science journey so far this term we have been learning about Light. We have learned that light sources can be natural or artificial and that we need light to be able to see. This week we have been learning about shadows. Shadows are formed when a light is placed in front of an object that prevents the light from passing through it. It creates a dark area or shape, a shadow, as a result. We made shadow puppets and drew around the shadows we created using a torch.

Monday 9th May 2022 - PSHE

In PSHE, we have been talking about people who help us. We invited our local PSCO, Lisa Veitch, in to talk to us about the role a police officer plays in keeping us safe. She has a number on her sleeve which is her own, she is unique! She also has a body camera and a radio so she can communicate with her colleagues...we were a little disappointed she didn't have a tazer! She talked through what else she needs to do her job and then we asked her lots of interesting questions!

Tuesday 3rd May 2022 - Music

This week in Music we have learned that percussion instruments are instruments that you play by striking with your hand, a stick or a beater.  Percussion instruments can also be played by shaking them. These instruments include cymbals, drums, xylophone, gongs, bells and rattles.

Have a look how we got on learning what sound each instrument made.

Friday 29th April 2022 - Our first week back

Have a look at all the activities we have done this week. We've talked about books that are special to us and we made our own bookmark, learnt a lot more about fractions and decimals, started learning about our new text 'Dudley', discovered what a natural light source is, looked at photographs of our local area many years ago and discussed who helps us. Now we're ready for our long weekend!

ACADEMIC YEAR 2021/2022

SPRING TERM

Spring Term Curriculum Map

Friday 8th April 2022 - PSHE

This week, we learned about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. We had a cake sale to raise money to help the people of Ukraine. A mountain of cakes were brought in and sold - thanks to everyone who brought them in.

We also wore yellow and blue, the colours of the Ukrainian flag, to show our support.

Thursday 31st March 2022 - Reach Outdoors

Today we enjoyed two exciting bush craft activities. We learned how to light a fire using a flint, cotton wool and sticks and then we got to toast marshmallows and make Smores! After that, we got to make a shelter for an animal using the resources we could find in our woodland area. We also made a shelter for humans using ropes, tarpaulins and sticks which we then tested to check they were water tight! What a brilliant day we had despite the cold!

Wednesday 23rd March 2022 - Science

During Science, we have been experimenting and observing what plants need to grow healthily. We planted some cress seeds. Some seeds were put in the dark with no water and some were put in the dark but they were watered. Some seeds had light but no water and some had water and light. We observed that seeds without water did not grow at all. Seeds that were watered but were in the dark grew but the leaves were yellow. Finally, the plants that had water and light grew healthily.

We concluded that plants need water and light to grow.

Great Science Year 3!

Monday 14th March 2022 - PE - Rugby

Today we had an extra PE session in the form of a Rugby lesson. We were very lucky to have a coach from Paignton Rugby Club visit and give us an insight in what it would be like to play Rugby. Have a look at the great fun we had.

Monday 7th March 2022 - Science

This week in Science, we looked at how water is transported through plants. We put a white flower in either red or blue coloured water. The children were amazed to see that the white flower changed into the colour of the water it was in. We learned that plants absorb water from the soil where the plant is planted. Then, the water travels through the plant to the stem. Water is sucked up through the stem  and then the stem passes water on to the leaves and flowers. Through our experiment, we learned that the stem can transport water too!

Thursday 3rd March - World Book Day

As part of our World Book Day learning, children dressed up as their favourite book characters. We were lucky enough to spend some time with Year 6 children to share our books together. We really enjoyed it!

Monday 14th February 2022 - Maths

This week in our Maths journey, we are looking at Statistics. We have learned about tally charts and pictograms. Today we went outside and collected our own data on the different coloured cars in the car park. We then used this data to make our own tally chart and pictogram. We found out that black white were the most popular car colour.

Wednesday 9th February 2022 - Science

As part of our 'Rocks' topic, we have been looking at soil. We learned what soil is made from and why soil is not all the same colour. Using our magnifying glasses,  we examined compost, the soil in the school plant pots and the soil under the trees. We found lots of things making up the soil including rocks, sticks, dead leaves and sand.

Great observations Year 3!

Thursday 3rd February 2022 - Dance

Today we watched an amazing video clip of dancers using their arms.  We discussed that it was so effective because the dancers were all in time. We came up with our own ten arm movements and practised with our partner or group. Have a look at the video and our armography!

Geometric Dance - YouTube

Thursday 27th January 2022 - Geography

Today in our Geography lesson we learned the difference between physical features and human features. Physical features are features that occur naturally and human features are features that are man made.

Tuesday 18th January 2022 - Spelling strategies

Today, we used different strategies to help us remember our spellings.  First, we discussed what each word means. Then we wrote them in a pyramid, we used look, say, cover, write, check, we also drew around the shape of the word showing its ascenders and descenders.

Monday 10th January 2022 - Bikeability

Today some of us were fortunate enough to take part in Bikeability where we learned to ride our bike properly. We all had to ensure we all wore our helmets for safety. We learned to take one hand off the handlebars whilst riding and to look behind us when we are riding and also before we set off.

Friday 7th January 2021 - First week back!

Have a look at what we have been busy doing during our first week back at school!

Tuesday 14th December 2021 - Christmas Dinner

Today dressed in our finest Christmas jumpers we had our delicious Christmas dinner in the hall. Have a look at our great photos!

Wednesday 8th December 2021 - History

Today, we made our own timelines. We sorted pictures of significant events from the Stone Age up to the Iron Age. We used the dates on the pictures to sort them into chronological order. We then labelled the timeline into the three eras of prehistory Britain (Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age).

Great ordering Year 3!

Monday 29th November 2021 - Science

In Science, have been learning about food chains. We found out what producers and consumers were and which animals were prey and predators. Then we created our own food chains!

Friday 26th November 2021 - Science

As part of our Science learning we have been looking at living things and their habitats. We wanted to investigate how Polar Bears in the Arctic survive the extreme temperatures, so we made our own 'blubber glove'. We learned that this layer of fat acts as an insulator to keep the heat in! Have a look at our learning below!

Wednesday 17th November 2021

In History this week, we read the story 'The First Drawing' about how drawing started in the Stone Age.

We then talked about the 'Lascaux Cave'  in France and the discovery of Palaeolithic cave paintings which are of exceptional quality. They show representations of animals and things we recognise today.

We then drew our own cave art using charcoal.

Great work Year 3.

Monday 8th November 2021 - Science

In Science, we have been exploring things that are alive, dead and never alive. The children have been learning about life processes including respiration, sensitivity, nutrition and growth. We discussed how Lego has never been alive as it is made of plastic and how flour is dead as it was once part of a living plant.

We then went outside to discover how many things we could find from each category. The things they found inspired great discussion as they decided which category to sort them in.

Fantastic Science. Well done Year 3.

Wednesday 3rd November 2021 - Geography

Today we learned what an Atlas is and how to use it. We found out all about the index and contents page and what we can find from these pages. We had fun finding different countries around the world. We then used the Key at the side of the map to see that rivers are thin blue lines on a map. The index told us what page we would find named rivers in the United Kingdom on and we then labelled these on our map of the United Kingdom.

Friday 22nd October 2021 - Science

As part of our Science learning we have been looking at a balanced diet. We have learned that the five food groups are Protein, Carbohydrates, Dairy, Fats and Sugars and Fruit and Vegetables. Today we put this learning into practice and made ourselves a healthy wrap. Our wrap included a food from each of the 5 food groups. The best bit of all we got to eat them afterwards. Yummy!

Thursday 14th October 2021 - Spanish

We are doing a great job of learning a new language! We answer the register in Spanish and we are learning how to ask someone if they are well. If our friend asks us how we are feeling we know how to reply in Spanish! In our Spanish sessions, we play lots of fun games too!

Monday 4th October - Music

Today in our Music lesson we learned about the pulse or rhythm of a song. We listened to the sea shanty called 'Wellerman' by Nathan Evans and then we joined in clapping and stomping out the pulse and rhythm.

Monday 27th September 2021 - Geography

We have been learning all about rivers. We know that a river is a physical feature and that it changes over time. This is due to erosion by the wind and rain. We carried out an investigation to show how a river bank is eroded by the water flowing down it. We made a slope, mountain and a cliff using some soil. Then we trickled water from the highest points, just like rainfall! We could see that tiny parts of our river bank were washed away in the flowing water. Amazing!

Monday 20th September 2021 - Science

In today's learning, we had a chance to flex our muscles! We learned new scientific vocabulary including the names of the joints of our body. We also found out about how the muscles in our arms work in pairs. When we lower our arm our bicep relaxes and gets longer and our tricep gets shorter.

We then went out into the playground and did jumping jacks, marching and twisting to see which muscles we were using. This activity made us all smile which uses 12 different muscles.

What a great lesson.

Tuesday 14th September 2021 - PE

We had our first PE session with Mr Leaman today. We had to throw and catch a ball. We learned how to do a chest throw, a bounce pass and a shoulder pass. Soon we will be able to do PE outside and use our ball skills to play netball! Mr Leaman said we were amazing listeners which made us feel really proud.

Wednesday 8th September 2021 - Our first day in Year 3!

What a busy day we have had! We started our day with an assembly with all our friends. We talked to each other and sang together. Today we recorded our Maths learning in our brand new Maths books! We were able to play with all our friends at play and lunch time which was so much fun. After lunch we learned about our new theme 'Free to be me' and what we will be learning about in Science this half term. We talked about what made a happy classroom and then created our own class charter. Finally we shared a story. We can't wait for tomorrow!
