'Inspiring Learning Together'

White Rock Primary School

WELCOME TO YEAR 1 BRAMBLINGS

The Brambling can be found most commonly in the British Isles during the cold winter months, the rest of the year it explores other regions of the world. They travel in large groups (usually in the thousands!) and we will take this characteristic of this bird and use it in our classroom to ensure that there is a sense of teamwork to encourage all children to work together and support each other in their learning journey!

THIS TERMS THEME

'Be Curious'

This term we will immerse ourselves in the cultures and traditions of Kenya. We will compare and contrast what we learn about Kenya with our lives in Paignton. We will explore the world of plants and go on a trip to Paignton Zoo. This will culminate with an exciting learning celebration to share with our parents.

P.E AND DANCE DAYS

PE is on a Monday and Dance is on a Wednesday each week. Please ensure that your child has the correct kit in school all week. We will ensure that they are sent home at the end of every half term.

HOME LEARNING DAYS

Phonics Home Learning will be handed out on a Monday and Maths Home Learning will be handed out on Friday. Books will be collected in on a Wednesday. This will give you the opportunity to explore aspects of your child's learning if you wish.

Tuesday 30th April - Physical Education

Athletics is the Year 1 focus this half term, with the children from Bramblings learning about relays and how to safely changeover the baton. They learned all about 'chase relays' and how it is important to transfer the baton from one runner to the next quickly to try and catch the other teams. They understood the techniques and tactics well and all teams were able to be successful.

Monday 29th April 2024- Geography- African Artefacts

Today Year 1 discovered some African Artefacts in Buntings classroom. We found some patterned material, a tea pot, a fan which also doubles up as a fly squat and a beaded necklace. We watched a clip of a safari in African and named the different animals that live in Africa. We then went onto Google Maps to find where Paignton is and compared this to where Mombasa is and discussed how we would travel there.

Monday 22nd April 2024- Science- Plants

This week, we have started our new Science learning all about plants. We started our learning off by drawing what we thought would happen to a seed if we planted it. We then had a go at planting our own bean seeds. We are going to use our observational skills to watch them grow each week. We were then tasked with finding out the name of different flowers and plants, so we went on a hunt around the school grounds to see what we could find! Have a look at our Science photos so far.

Thursday 18th April 2024 - Music - Rocksteady

This week the children at White Rock were lucky enough to be visited by Tom from Rocksteady. They had an assembly introducing them to Rocksteady followed by an interactive workshop. Rocksteady provide in school fun and inclusive rock and pop band lessons. The children were able to learn about the electric guitar, keyboard and drum kit as well as having a go on the microphones. They all had so much fun!

Tuesday 26th March 2024- Learning Celebration

This week, we invited our parents into school to share some of the learning from the Spring term. We shared some facts about the Titanic and everyone was confident enough to want a speaking role! We also performed a short piece of music using the glockenspiels. Finally, we showed our parents our own collages of the Titanic and then they had a go at making their own with our careful supervision. Everyone had a wonderful time and our parents were very impressed with our fabulous learning.

Monday 18th March 2024- RE

On Monday, we were really lucky to have a Jewish Faith speaker talk to us via video. We found out lots of information about Jewish religion such as Shabbat. We learnt that this is a complete day of rest. We got to ask lots of questions such as 'Where do you pray?'.

Wednesday 13th March 2024 - Gymnastics

We have been really enjoying our Gymnastics lessons this half term. This week we were practising jumping and landing with bent knees. We also recapped our shapes, remembering to squeeze our muscles to make a strong shape. Stretching is important in Gymnastics too, so we always make sure we stretch our muscles so we don't injure ourselves.

Tuesday 12th March 2024- Writing- Don't Spill the Paint!

In Writing this week, we have started to read our new class text 'Don't Spill the Milk!' On Tuesday, we went on our very own journey of 'Don't Spill the Paint!' As we walked through the school, we chanted 'Walk tall, walk steady through the corridor, don't quiver, don't fall off the trim trail, left foot right foot all the way up the stairs, finally we got back to the classroom when...SPLOSH, a big football landed in the tin.' We had so much fun going on our very own journey and luckily Mrs Darby didn't spill the paint!

Friday 8th March 2024- Spanish

Today, we had a special visitor in our classroom to teach us Spanish! We learned the words Hola (hello) and Adios (goodbye) and sang some songs in Spanish. This fits in with our 'One World One Heart' geography theme and we looked at which continent Spain is in (it's Europe!).

Monday 26th February 2024- History and Phonics

What a busy week we have had in Year One! On Monday, we had our History/Writing experience day. For this, we transformed the three classes into 1st,2nd and 3rd class. The children then used role play to imagine what life was like on board the greatest ship of that era! We will be using our History knowledge and skills to inform our writing-this will be a non-fiction page all about the Titanic.

On Tuesday, we held our second Phonics workshop and parents listened to a short talk about the Phonics journey so far and were given information about the Phonics Screening Check. The parents then came to watch our lessons and were so impressed with our amazing learning behaviours. Well done Year One!

Wednesday 21st February- Physical Education

The children have been working really hard on their fundamental movement skills this year in PE and have progressed to a level where they are learning to catch. They are learning techniques for catching beanbags including ‘domes and butterflies’ but will soon be confident catching a variety of larger balls.

Monday 5th February 2024- Art

In Art this week we made a collage. We used different colour paper and used either scissors or our hands to rip the paper. We then stuck this down in our Art book to make a collage. During the lesson we also learnt about the Artist Henri Matisse and found out he was born in France! We are going to be looking at Matisse's work and making collages linked to our History learning of the Titanic.

Thursday 1st February - P.E

Today we went to Paignton Academy to a sports festival. We had great fun using our running, throwing and catching skills to complete all of the different activities led by the students there.

Wednesday 31st January 2024- Maths

In Maths this week we have been subtracting numbers from 20. We played a game with our partner. One of us made a number up to 10 on our tens frame and our partner made the number that is 10 more on their tens frame. We then rolled a dice and took that number away from each of our numbers. After we looked at our number and our partner's number to see if we could spot a pattern.

Thursday 25th January - Physical Education

This week we have had great fun playing on our new Trim Trail. We have been using our gross motor skills to climb, pull, weave and push our way over, round and across the obstacles. It's so much fun!!

Wednesday 24th January 2024 - Dance

We have been learning about African dance and trying to create our own short dances. This week we watched some traditional African dances and used this as inspiration for our own short dances. We had to work with a partner to include two poses from pictures and link them together with a travelling move (like a turn, jump, walk or roll). We found this quite tricky so are going to practise this some more next week.

Monday 15th January 2024- Writing

We have started a new Writing journey this week and our 'hook' into the learning was a mysterious egg which was left in our classrooms! We discussed where we thought the egg came from and then read our new model text, Tell me a Dragon.

Wednesday 10th January 2024- Geography

This week, the children in Bramblings have been using their Geography skills to puzzle piece together the map of the United Kingdom and labelling the different countries. They have looked at each countries capital cities, population and famous landmarks! Well done for using your brilliant Geography skills Bramblings to complete the puzzle!

Thursday 4th January - Handwriting

What a busy first week back after the Christmas holidays! The children have been very excited this week to write in their new handwriting books for the first time! This week we have been focusing on the curly caterpillar letters: c, a, o, d, g, q, e, s and f. The children have tried their best to form all the letters correctly and make sure they are sitting on the line. Well done for your brilliant handwriting!

Thursday 7th December - RE

Weren't they amazing!! We are so proud of all of the Year 1 children. Their two performances of the Christmas story, 'The Innkeeper's Breakfast', were incredible. They acted, they sang and they danced to create a brilliant show.

Wednesday 22nd November 2023 - Dance

In Dance, we are learning dance styles from the past. So far we have learnt the Hand Jive and Rock and Roll from the 1950s and the Twist from the 1960s. When learning the Hand Jive, we had to watch Mrs Tyson really closely to copy the moves as they were quite quick. The Twist was great fun to learn as we had to wiggle our hips while bending our knees and lowering ourselves down and then coming back up. We also had to balance on one leg and lift the other leg up while twisting! Next week we are going to learn some moves from the dance 'Night Fever', which is a famous dance from the 1970s.

Friday 17th November 2023 - Children in Need

Thank you for all the donations for Children in Need over the week. The children loved dressing up in yellow and spotty clothes as well as taking part in different games in the hall run by the Year 6 Sports Captains. Some children also donated 50p to have a go at guessing how many sweets were in a jar. We will find out the result on Monday and which child will be the lucky winner of all of the sweets!

Monday 13th November - Art

This week we have been learning all about self-portraits. We have studied the work or Vincent Van Gogh and compared it with that of Picasso's. We then had a go at experimenting with brush strokes in the style of Van Gogh.

Tuesday 7th November- Phonics parent workshop

This week we had some very special visitors during our phonics lessons! We enjoyed waving to our grown ups and showing them how brilliant we are at learning new graphemes (spellings). We we learning all about i and how it makes an igh sound in words like wild, child and kind. We hope you enjoyed visiting our classes and seeing our wonderful learning.

Tuesday 31st October 2023 - Design & Technology

What a busy week Year 1 have had back at school! In Design & Technology, the children designed and made their own gingerbread man. The children thought carefully about their design making sure to label the different parts. They all had a go at mixing the ingredients and rolling the dough before cutting out the gingerbread man shape. Finally they were able to decorate their gingerbread man after they were baked which they all agreed was the best bit!

Monday 16th October - History

This term we are learning all about change within living memory. We have been focusing on how toys have changed over time. This week we went on an amazing school trip to Bygones to learn about the past. We compared toys we play with to the ones we saw in the museum and we found out that toys used to be made from china, wood or metal instead of plastic.

Monday 9th October 2023 - Music

In Music this week, Year 1 have been doing some cross curricular learning by listening to and playing instruments to the gingerbread man song. The children learnt the meaning of the word 'tempo' and changed how fast or slow they played their instruments to the song. They all had so much fun!

Friday 6th October 2023 - Phonics

This week Year 1 have been doing some super phonics! The children have begun learning Phase 5 graphemes including 'ay', 'ou', 'oy' and 'ea'. They all enjoyed playing the grapheme spotter game, where they have to put their hands on their head when they spot the new grapheme. Ask me at home to teach you our new graphemes and think of any words that have these graphemes in!

Monday 25th September 2023- Computing

This week, we had our very first computing lesson in the ICT suite at school! We learned how to sit at the desk safely (the chairs spin!) and how to hold a mouse correctly. We then had a go at using the paint software on Purple Mash to help us learn to control our mouse.

Year 1 have been doing lots of brilliant learning in maths this week! The children have been learning to represent numbers as words, trying their best to spell them correctly. They have also been practising counting on from any number within 10. They then used this knowledge to help them find one more of a number within 10.

Monday 11th September - Science

This half term in Science, we will be looking at Animals including humans. We have started this learning journey with looking at the different parts of the human body. We identified the different parts of the body on a diagram and used Scientific language to label each part. We also drew around one of our class friends and everyone enjoyed labelling the large diagram on sugar paper!

Wednesday 6th September- Our first week in our new class!

We have had a great first week back and the children have loved seeing their friends and exploring their new classroom!
