WELCOME TO YEAR 2 CRANES
Cranes are opportunistic birds that change their diet according to the season. Cranes class demonstrate this when they adapt their learning skills to different topics. Cranes are kind and helpful to others and bring teamwork into all aspects of our school day. However, they can be solitary at times, using independence and resilience when faced with certain challenges.

PE AND DANCE DAYS
PE/Dance Days are on a Tuesday each week. Please ensure that your child has the correct kit in school all week. We will ensure that they are sent home at the end of every half term.
HOME LEARNING DAYS
Home Learning will be handed out on a Friday each week. This will alternate between a written task and some tasks set on Mathletics. Home learning books will be collected in on a Wednesday. The children will also bring home their decodable books each week (Friday) and these need to be returned on the following Monday.

Thursday 8th October 2026 - Local Author
Today, Year 2 were lucky enough to have local author, Luke Marchant, share his latest story, Arthur and the Wild Griffin with us. Based around Torbay (and featuring Paignton Zoo!) the tale follows a child who discovers a zoo full of fantasy creatures and finds himself tending to the many mythical beasts in its care. We had a live assembly featuring extracts from the book, and the stories behind the story, as well as Luke performing a live book-signing. It was an incredible experience! Monday 28th September 2026 - Little Red Riding Hood
We had an exciting visitor in class today whilst we were in assembly! The 'Big Bad Wolf' snuck into our class and left us a letter and a book! It turns out that he is a changed wolf and doesn't like being referred to as 'Big Bad' any more. He has asked us to re-write the story of Little Red Riding Hood using a different baddie and maybe making him the hero...we had fun reading the original story and coming up with ideas for our own traditional tale.
Tuesday 22nd September 2026- European Day of Languages
“We all smile in the same language"
What a fantastic day we had celebrating European Day of Languages at White Rock! Señorita Head led a whole-school assembly, supported by our wonderful Language Ambassadors. We celebrated the many languages spoken within out school community and enjoyed hearing some impressive Spanish learning from children in Years 2 to 6. Throughout the day, Señorita Head visited every class, where children also took part in a fun photo booth activity, using a range of colourful props and puppets, which was enjoyed by everyone.
There was lots of singing in different languages, including Spanish, Italian, German and French, as well as plenty of laughter and learning throughout the day. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and explore different languages and cultures from across Europe. Happy European Languages Day everyone!
Thursday 17th September 2026 - Music
This week in school, the children have been exploring different elements of music. They have used their voices, body percussion and drums to explore pitch, rhythm and volume. The children have been using musical vocabulary such as forte for loud and piano for quiet. Take a look at some photos below.
Wb: Monday 7th September 2026
Over the next few weeks, Year 2 will be reading 'This is how we do it' by Matt Lamothe. We will be exploring how we share similarities and differences to those living in different countries. At the end of this unit, we will write our own non-fiction text about ourselves and share this with our fellow Year 2s.
