White Rock Primary School

WELCOME TO YEAR 6 OWLS

Owls are creatures of great integrity. They are also serene and wise, using all their senses to adapt to their surroundings. The wisdom of an owl enables them to be unafraid and tackle any challenges they may face.

Summer Term Curriculum Map: Be Curious

Wednesday 20th July - Cricket trip to Somerset

Today, 30 children in Year 5 and 6 visited Somerset Cricket Club to watch a match between Somerset and Yorkshire. All the children enjoyed watching the cricket, completing the activity book and getting autographs from some of the players. Have a look at some of our photos below!

Tuesday 27.6.22

Wow! What a day we have had! Today saw Year 6 prepare for a Come Dine with Me Experience. The starter was based around peppers, the main was based around rice and the dessert was based around pineapple. All Year 6 created their own reciepe and the year group voted for their favourite. Well done to Leonie and India for their Fruit Cocktail and Vanilla ice-cream dessert and to Oliver and Jack for their curry and rice main.

We have had a great day cooking food and tasting it! Our classes favourite was the dessert!

Leaver's Assembly Songs

For your homework for the next 3 weeks, we would like you to learn songs for the leavers assembly. We will be practising these in school as well but it would be great if you could learn the words as thoroughly as possible. Happy singing!

Friday 10th June - Climate Change Speeches

In Year 6, we prepared persuasive speeches to discuss how Torbay could positively impact climate change. We selected our favourite speeches from each class who then took part in a final debate. We spoke confidently, factually and persuasively to deliver our speeches.

Climate Change speeches

We have been writing and practising speeches to enter into the Torbay Parliament competition. This year's focus is on Climate Change and what Torbay can do to help. The children researched and wrote their own persuasive speeches and the class voted for the speech they thought was the most expressive and persuasive. All groups did so well and I am very proud of all the children!

Monday 23rd May - History Visitor

This Monday, we were lucky to have a visit from the chairman of the Torbay Civic Society. He came in to speak to us about the key historical local figure of Agatha Christie. We learned lots about her life and the key physical sites around Torbay and South Devon!

Week beginning 16.5.22

As part of our Geography learning, we are exploring Australia. We have been producing Aboriginal artwork. We explored the origins of the art and looked at which native animals are commonly painted. We created patterns using cotton buds and paint! We are still in the planning and beginning stages so keep looking for our finished products!

Week Beginning 25.4.22

This week, in Science, we have been experimenting to see if we could bend light! We used a glass of water and passed it from right to left in front of an arrow. The results were amazing! The arrow looked to be pointing in the opposite direction! Look at our write ups to find out what else we found out.

Spring Term Learning - One World, One Heart

Spring Term Learning - One World One Heart

15th March 2022

In Music, we have been learning how sounds are made. We investigated using a variety of instruments including drums, recorders and a pocket cornet and discovered that sound is made through vibrations. We then tried to make sound by blowing grass - it was really hard! Some of us did it first time!

Week beginning 7.3.22

This week, in Science, we have been looking at how shadows are formed. We have learnt that the further the object is away from the light source, the larger the shadow will be. We had great fun using torches and measuring sticks!

For the last 2 weeks before half term, we had an amazing time climbing and caving with Reach Outdoors! We really pushed ourselves out of our comfort zone and reached new heights! We are so proud of ourselves!

We have had the most amazing Science lesson this week! We have been Woking Scientifically and have actually removed DNA from a banana! It was fantastic to see the white DNA appear on the top of the solution we had left over once we had mixed squashed banana with the DNA extraction buffer - salt, water and washing up liquid. Look at the photos to see how much we enjoyed the experiment.

Friday 28th January

We have been learning all about Harry Potter and we are going to write a hybrid text all about flying broomsticks and the wizard sport of Quidditch! We have been practising our writing and have written a shared write all about the Gryffindor Quidditch captain, Oliver Wood. Take a look at our writing!

Tuesday 18th January

In Geography, we have been learning all about renewable energy and thinking about the benefits and disadvantaged of fossil fuels. It has been so interesting to learn about how fossil fuels have been used throughout history - we now know that the use of fossil fuels to provide energy is not sustainable and will continue with our learn how we can make an environment which is more sustainable for the future.

Tuesday 11th January - Harry Potter Day!

Well - what a MAGICAL day we have had! Teachers and children alike dressed up in Harry Potter costumes and brought into school with them a range of Harry Potter gadgets and gizmos including wands, spell books and even a Time Turner!

We have had great fun making witches hats, magic potions and deciphering what is actually written around the edge of the Mirror of Erised!

Now -  onto writing our own Harry Potter text!

05.01.2022 - Science

In Science this week, we began to look at adaptations in desert animals, such as camels. We thought carefully about how different adaptations help camels survive, such as wide feet to help it from sinking in the sand. We also learned that camels have a fat store in their humps and they can convert this to energy when they are hungry! What amazing creatures!

Autumn Term Learning - FREE TO BE ME

12.11.21

We've started a new learning journey in Art this week and are now studying the sculptor, Henri Moore.  We've been finding out lots of information about him and presenting it in our own artistic styles.

11.11.21

Year 6 have been getting into a book called 101 Things To Do to Become a Superhero or Evil Genius. We've loved reading some of the pages in the book that give instructions on how we can develop skills required to be a superhero. This week, we have designed our own superhero and been able to describe them using single and multi-clause sentences and given instructions for others on how they can train to be like their superhero using modal verbs.

22.10.21
Throughout this half term, the children in Year 6 have been learning the rules of netball and the skills required to play it well. They have been able to run and umpire their own matches.

15.10.21

Over the past week, we've got 'stuck in' to the book called 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. We've loved the first eight chapters and have been able to summarise the story well. Towards the end of the week, we worked together to come up with brilliantly descriptive phrases we could use if we wanted to describe Camp Green Lake.

08.10.21

Wow! We have continued our learning about life cycles and various forms of reproduction. Towards the end of this week, the whole class have taken great enjoyment in presenting all of their new-found knowledge on the life cycles of a large variety of living things in non-chronological reports. They are brilliantly written and beautifully presented. Well done Owls!

29.09.21

This week, Owls have been scientists, investigating the life cycles of plants, mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles. The children have disected a flower to identify the different parts of the flowers involved in reproduction. We can all explain difference between life cycles of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians and have used scientific skills of report writing and orally shared reports.

23.09.21

What a great first PE lesson of the year as we went off to coasteer around Fishcombe and Churston Cove! We all thoroughly enjoyed pushing ourselves to take on challenges of swimming from rock to rock, climbing up and around the them before launching ourselves off! Everyone did themselves proud!

22.09.21

Over the past few weeks, Owls have been learning about citizenship in PSHE lessons. We've considered our role as a citizen of our school community. We've looked at what it might be like to be a citizen of a country that is ruled by a dictator and how that is different from being part of a democracy. Today, we began to turn our attention to the important role we can play as citizens of the world by learning about pollution. The Education Team from Paignton Zoo came along and made us all think about how plastics enter our oceans and what we can do to help prevent this.

10.9.21

What a great first week back! Our new Year 6s in Owls have got stuck right into our learning this week - place value in Maths, Autobiographies in writing, citizenship, democracy and dictatorships in PSHE and that's all just in the first week. It's been a great start!
