Leaver's Assembly Songs

For your homework for the next 3 weeks, we would like you to learn songs for the leavers assembly. We will be practising these in school as well but it would be great if you could learn the words as thoroughly as possible. Happy singing!

Wednesday 20th July - Cricket trip to Somerset

Today, 30 children in Year 5 and 6 visited Somerset Cricket Club to watch a match between Somerset and Yorkshire. All the children enjoyed watching the cricket, completing the activity book and getting autographs from some of the players. Have a look at some of our photos below!

Friday 10th June - Climate Change Speeches

In Year 6, we prepared persuasive speeches to discuss how Torbay could positively impact climate change. We selected our favourite speeches from each class who then took part in a final debate. We spoke confidently, factually and persuasively to deliver our speeches.

Children's Parliament Resources

Below are some resources for you to use over the next week to help you with your research.

Jubilee celebration song - updated

Thursday 26th May - Art

In Art this term, we have been learning all about Australian Aboriginal art. We studied the amazing history and investigated what different symbols meant. We then produced our own designs inspired by previous works.

Wednesday 25th May - History
While studying Agatha Christie as part of our local study, Hawks used historical skills to focus on change and continuity within her hometown of Torquay. We looked at historical photographs and placed them in chronological order. Mr Beattie did not think we would be able to do it! We proved him wrong!

Monday 23rd May - History Visitor

This Monday, we were lucky to have a visit from the chairman of the Torbay Civic Society. He came in to speak to us about the key historical local figure of Agatha Christie. We learned lots about her life and the key physical sites around Torbay and South Devon!

Thursday 19th May - South Devon College Skills Build Day.

Year 6 were invited to join a skills build day at South Devon College. We took part in masonry, painting and decorating, carpentry and many more hands-on activities!

Monday 4th April - Music

In our music this half term, we have been learning to play the cornet! Check out our use of rhythm to play and march in formation like our own Hawks brass band!

Wednesday 23rd March 2022 - Maths

In Maths, Hawks have been learning all about algebra! We decided to take our learning outside and represent questions, bar models and images in the from of equations. Check out our learning!

Friday 18th March 2022- Red Nose Day!

Today is Red Nose Day! We came into school dressed as superheros or in red! To start the day, we had a whole school assembly about Red Nose Day and Comic Relief. Throughout the day, Year 6 children organised some fun activities for us to do, including red nose and spoon races, guess the number of red noses in the jar, pin the nose and a red nose day coin fill! We have also been drawing our own red noses ready for the competition! Check us out fundraising and raising money for Comic Relief!

Friday 11th March 2022
This week, in Science, we have been looking at how shadows are formed. We have learnt that the further the object is away from the light source, the larger the shadow will be. We had great fun using torches and measuring sticks

Thursday 3rd March - World Book Day

As part of our World Book Day learning, children dressed up as their favourite book characters. We were lucky enough to spend some time with Year 3 and Year 2 children to share our books together. We really enjoyed it!

Thursday 3rd February
As part of our Reach Outdoors Learning, we had a fantastic opportunity to go caving! We showed a huge amount of bravery, resilience and team work to navigate safely through the caves. Check out the photos below!

Friday 28th January - Art
In our art lesson today, we reproduced pictures of flowering plants in the style of Matisse. We used primary colours and our knowledge of watercolours to reproduce some beautiful artwork!

Tuesday 18th January - Writing

We have been learning all about Harry Potter and we are going to write a hybrid text all about flying broomsticks and the wizard sport of Quidditch! We have been practising our writing and have written a shared write all about the Gryffindor Quidditch captain, Oliver Wood. Take a look at our writing!

Tuesday 11th January - Harry Potter Day!

Well - what a MAGICAL day we have had! Teachers and children alike dressed up in Harry Potter costumes and brought into school with them a range of Harry Potter gadgets and gizmos including wands, spell books and even a Time Turner!

We have had great fun making witches hats, magic potions and deciphering what is actually written around the edge of the Mirror of Erised!

Now -  onto writing our own Harry Potter text!

05.01.2022 - Science

In Science this week, we began to look at adaptations in desert animals, such as camels. We thought carefully about how different adaptations help camels survive, such as wide feet to help it from sinking in the sand. We also learned that camels have a fat store in their humps and they can convert this to energy when they are hungry! What amazing creatures!

Wednesday 1st December - Science
During Science, Hawks conducted a comparative test to explore what conditions fungi needs to grow. We thought carefully about how we can make the test fair and then we made predictions (some of our predictions were correct!). To conclude, we asked further questions to develop our knowledge. One question was, "Does temperature make a difference?" Take a look at our fungi below!

Friday 26th November - Art
We've started a new learning journey in Art this week and are now studying the sculptor, Henry Moore.  We've been finding out lots of information about him and presenting it in our own artistic styles.

Monday 15th November
This week, Year 6 were incredibly fortunate to attend the Dartmouth Academy Fun day! We took part in some really fun activities in Art and Science to experience life in secondary school! Take a look at the photos to see what we got up to!

Monday 8th November - Geography
During this weeks Geography lesson, Hawks compared two maps to identify the positions of volcanoes and tectonic plates. Hawks identified a range of patterns and learned how some tectonic plates can cause volcanoes to erupt.

Wednesday 3rd November - RE

In RE this week, we experienced some of the traditions within the Jewish Festival of Passover. We were able to try grape juice, matzoh, parsley and a mix of sweet fruits and honey. Each food on the Seder plate is symbolic to the Exodus from Ancient Egypt.

Friday 22nd October - PE
The children in Hawks have worked hard to improve their netball. They have improved their knowledge of the rules, technical ability and tactical knowledge. Take a look at the amazing netball skills in action!

Thursday 14th October - Geography
During this term, Hawks have been learning all about volcanoes. We have learned what a volcano is, what happens when a volcano erupts and located volcanoes around the world.

Friday 8th October - perseverance
Alfie blew us all away with his rubik's cube skills! Alfie started learning this skills two months ago and has shown great stickability to master this skill! Well done Alfie!

Tuesday 6th October - Maths
As part of their Maths learning about multiplication, Hawks have been exploring how we can use partitioning to help us multiply larger numbers. Doing this practically, on the tables, really helps their understanding and fluency.

Monday 4th October - Science - Asexual reproduction in plants, microorganisms and fungi.

Today in our Science learning, we explored how some living things reproduce asexually. This means that only parent is needed to create offspring and they create a perfect clone of themselves too keep their lifecycle going! We planned our own scientific enquiry to see asexual reproduction in action. We took cuttings of basil plants, used rooting powder to encourage root growth and potted them in nutrient-rich soil. Hopefully, we will soon see if they would grow smaller plants - proving that basil plants can reproduce asexually!

Tuesday 28th September - Science
This week, Hawks have been scientists, investigating the life cycles of plants, mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles. The children have disected a flower to identify the different parts of the flowers involved in reproduction. We can all explain difference between life cycles of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians and have used scientific skills of report writing and orally shared reports.

Wednesday 22nd September - PSHE
As part of our learning around recycling week, we were visited by Paignton Zoo who spoke to us about plastic pollution and its impact on sealife. We explored types of rubbish collected from the Bay and identified how this may have reached the sea. We looked at micro-plastics and completed some activities to help us truly appreciate the disastrous implications we will have on nature if we do not do more to fight plastic pollution!

Thursday 16th September - Reach Outdoors
Coasteering is an exhilarating, combined rock and water activity that Year 6 have loved! Catered to every individual level, this activity is suitable for those with no fear of heights or water as well as those who may not be quite so confident.  During their Coasteering trip, Hawks experienced rock climbing and scrambling techniques, as well as how to jump from heights into the sea safely. Wearing sturdy footwear, wet suits, buoyancy aids and helmets, Hawks travelled along the Fishcombe Cove section of the coastline; sometimes swimming in the sea, sometimes scrambling on rocks and jumping from rocks into the sea. They jumped out their comfort zone and loved every second!
