Autumn Term Curriculum Map

Above Water, Water Education! Friday 12th July 2019

Today in Year 3 we had a visit from 'Above Water' an educational charity that teaches children about staying safe in the water. We learnt what lifeguards have to do when someone is in danger in the water and how to keep ourselves safe. We tried on a lifeguards uniform and even saved someone from drowning! Our instructor told us by lying on our backs in the water, even if we can't swim, will prevent us from drowning. We also learnt how to make a big motion with our arms to get the attention of an adult if we feel unsafe in the water.

Our instructor told us that we are allowed to ask our parents/guardians to put their phones down when we are in any type of water, even the bath. 7 children died last year due to parents/carers being on their phones whilst a child was in water. Have a look below at all the important and fun learning we did today!

Money Workshop - Thursday 11th July 2019

Redwings were visited by 2 members of staff from one of our local banks this week. We got to be travel agents and designed a perfect holiday for different families. We had to stick to a strict budget and make sure that the family did all the activities they wanted to! We also made posters and presented our holidays to the rest of the class.

Tuesday 2nd July - Seed dispersal

This week, Redwings have been learning about seed dispersal. We sorted seeds in to 3 groups based on how they are dispersed. We found out that seeds that travel by wind, water and on (or in!) animals. We then designed seeds that would be able to travel by air.

Freddie even managed to find some seeds that are dispersed by humans!

Visit from Adam Nevill - Friday 21st June 2019

This morning, Year Three were lucky enough to be visited by author Adam Nevill. He talked to us about how he creates suspense in his stories and taught us how to write our own. He told us that we need to make our characters scared in order to scare our readers, as well as some other trade secrets! We helped Adam by drawing a scary version of the tiger before listening to Adam’s version of The Tiger Who Came to Tea…’Sophie’s Last Tea’ and then wrote our own versions.

Skillsbuild at South Devon College - Thursday 13th June

Friday 7th June 2019 - Fantastic Fractions!

This week Redwings have been calculating fractions of amounts. We learned that we have to divide the whole into equal parts and then multiply to find non-unit fractions. This may became much easier to 'swallow' when we started using skittles...!

Friday 3rd May 2019 - Assembly Performance

This week two children from Redwings demonstrated that they sing as sweetly as our namesake birds during a whole school celebration assembly. They performed two songs, have a look at the videos below!

Wednesday 24th April 2019 - Scientific Seeds

This week Redwings started a Science experiment to find out what plants need to grow. We decided that they need nutrients from soil, water, air and sunlight. We planted cress seeds and then put some in a dark box, and some in the sunlight. We are going to water some of them and leave others without water. We are going to monitor them over the next few weeks to see how well they grow.

Bushcraft at Whitehill Country Park - Thursday 21st March 2019

This week we had our first visit to Whitehill Country Park. We did archery, den building and fire building. Whilst we were building our dens, we came across lots of King Alfred's cakes! These are brown fungi (names after King Alfred because apparently he always burnt cakes!) were the first way to transport a fire as they hold embers which made it easy for people to relight fires as they travelled. In archery, we had to use bows to aim at a target and try and get the highest score! Have a look at the photos below to see how we got on.

Science Week - 15.3.19

This week has been Science Week at White Rock Primary School. In Redwings, we looked at how electricity is conducted and how that helps many countries around the world. We then learned about sustainable energy and how wind and solar power can help underdeveloped countries. We then made our own wind powered machines.

Thursday 7th March - World Book Day 2019

What an amazing day we had! We started off by reading stories to children in the nursery, we then took part in a book trail. We had to answer questions about famous books and authors and follow the clues all over the school! In the afternoon, we did a book quiz and even designed new covers and blurbs for our favourite books. Have a look at the pictures below to see how we got on.

Then, On Wednesday we went to Wildwood @Escot where we met some Celts who told us all about life as a Celt. We went on a woodland walk to see the different animals that would have been roaming free during the Roman times, such as Lynx, wolves and boars. Following on from the anti-bullying workshop last week, we have been thinking carefully about  the theme of this years anti-bullying campaign - 'Choose Respect'. We thought about how we show respect to everyone, both in school and at home. We then generated words that linked with respect.

We also explored what bullying would look like so we can help to 'spot it and stop it'!
