White Rock Primary School

Geography at White Rock

Intent

Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. At White Rock Primary School, children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding of the world and their place within that world. We believe Geography should inspire a lifelong curiosity and fascination about the world in which we live. We strive to develop children’s inquisitiveness about the world and its people by promoting an interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources, and natural and human environments together with a deepening understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. We want Geography to prepare our children, to give them the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences they need to be successful learners and responsible citizens within their community.

Implementation

The geography curriculum at White Rock enables children the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas. Ensuring high standards of teaching and learning we deliver a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Geography is taught, focussing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. These skills are designed to be progressive and as children move through the school their exposure to the world is broadened, learning about countries and regions further afield. Throughout the school we learn about our local area therefore deepening the children’s understanding and appreciation of their local environment before comparing it to different places around the world.

We believe Geography should be enhanced by real life experiences. For example, using the local area to plan a route to the local shops in Key Stage 1, to a trip along a local river to see how it meanders in Lower Key Stage 2, through to debating what we can do to help Global Warming, Climate change and Extreme weather in Upper Key Stage 2.

As a result of our planning and implementation of the geography curriculum we endeavour to enable the children to be ready for Geography in Key Stage 3 and for a life in the wider world.

This is implemented through:

- A robust, whole school, yearly overview of the geography curriculum which allows for progression across year groups in all areas of Geography. Through a range of exciting content, geography skills are revisited regularly throughout the curriculum, reinforcing and building on the complexity of each skill.
